Chargers likely to move to LA

Recommended Posts

Thank god they own it, otherwise it would be a sea of condos and 7-11's and you would not even see the ocean.

So true. We have enough of those.

Not to mention you'd miss the exciting moments when the Marines are staging a landing. The place is filled with boats, hovercraft and helicopters. It's real hard to pay attention to the road when that's happening.

Surely a name change will take place if the Chargers relocate:

The Eureka Vacuum?

The Death Valley Daze?

The Mammoth Midgets?

The Needles Tattoos?

The Pasadena Passdepeanuts?

The Merced EEzbenz?

The Coalinga Cunning Linguists?

That's Camp Pendleton. Federal land.

One of the potential sites the Chargers are looking at is located a few miles away from Camp Pendleton,in the city of Oceanside. The location is perfect because its not too far a drive for people living in L.A and Orange Counties and will help expand their market base.

This is not new. The Chargers are not exactly happy with their current location. I believe the deal would have already been done if they hadnt turned the team around the year Rivers was drafted.

Noone wants to say a winning team, who is making money, wants to move.

The location to which you refer is "Goat Hill" next to the I-5 in Oceanside. While it does represent an nice chunk of available land (soon to be, when the golf course lease ends in two years), the terrain is quite hilly and not conducive to the large, flat area that the developer needs. The Chargers have pretty much nixed the site as it also is too small to allow for the extra development they are seeking for a pay-as-you-go situation. The site was just a red herring in the negotiations.

The Chargers can stay in Mission Valley, go south to Chula Vista or look north to LA.

I know Toronto is the main concern at this point but I tend to think the NFL doesn't prefer to have a lot of franchises moving around in a short amount of time.

The line from the SD article which a link in the link refers you to is one by Mark Fabiani who is described as handling stadium issues for the Chargers. He says that a team does can buy a little time but cannot compete forever in the NFL without a new stadium.

This would seem from the article to apply to all NFL teams and IF true raises the question what about the Bills. The new stadium question strikes me as a tipping point for the Bills location issue as my sense that if a private party like Ralph paid for it one would not want to abandon it without the team staying in it for a couple of decades to recoup the cost of building and/or if the government paid for it, this would be done in a method which contractually keeps the Bills in it for a similar length of time.

The Bills can actually buy out of the current lease for chump change at any point but I suspect that a decision point will likely arrive in the not to distant future triggered by stadium purchase options or if life provides by Ralph's demise.

Why is it that now, when the Chargers have established themselves as a competitive team (3 playoff appearances the last 4 years) that they are moving? Before 2004 they were pretty underwhelming as a team and yet now is the time when they are thought to move.

By wining they have put themselves in a PR situation where the threat to move gives them to leverage a deal that gives them more public money for private purposes. Than quotes from inside the Chargers indicate a strong interest in moving is ironically one of the more likely signs that they would be happy to get a hefty public bribe (with the bonus of having this private entity get the public paid for stadium for their profit and probable sole use.

One of the main reasons I think the Bills are actually unlikely to move to Toronto is that the team is doing public work to lay a foothold in this market, Unfortunately, its when a team is silent that the Mayflower moving vans tend to show up in the middle of the night,

By far the greater likelihood in the Bills case would seem to be that given a choice between a franchise in Buffalo and a franchise in Toronto, the NFL likely would chose the option that generates the most cash for them which is to have two franchises in both the proven developed small market of WNY and the unproven but certainly far larger market in Toronto.

The NFL generally follows the money and the money is not simply in throwing away 40 years of work which guarantees about 40,000 season tickets without breaking a sweat and over 50,000 with some work.

I have yet to see anyone make a credible case as to why the two areas do not have the money and the population base to support two franchises. Follow the money and the money says keep the Buffalo money and exploit the Toronto money.

The stadium issue has been an ongoing battle between the team and the city for at least 10 years, and the lease has an escape clause that the Chargers can activate at the end of this season.

The "City" paid for remodeling the Stadium less than 8 years ago - this is akin to putting lipstick on a pig. The current stadium (Balboa Stadium) has been remodeled more times than Dolly Parton has had plastic surgery. What is valuable is the land under the stadium (despite the toxic plume from the fuel tanks on the hill - which have been there longer). The land is also on the flood plain of the San Diego River which runs amok about one week every three years,

Just like the Bills, the Chargers can buy their way out tomorrow - but where ? LA < > Toronto

The noise to signal ratio is always off

The Chargers will once again sell out their season tickets this season - but in SOCAL that does not mean fannies in the seats :wallbash:
