LABILL Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 I am not confident about the numbers (and perhaps someone can confirm), but I think the following on-the-fence players have large cap SAVINGS if we cut them -- any analysis of cuts should include what cap room we save with the cuts (obviously, those that count very little means very little in terms of savings, since replacements will cost equivalent): Justin Bannan -- $400,000 Antonio Brown -- $325,000 Angelo Crowell -- $305,000 Jason Gildon -- $1.2 million Ryan Lindell -- $790,000 Keith McKenzie -- $450,000 Jeff Posey -- $1.05 million Ryan Nuefeld -- $455,000 Pierson Prioleau -- $1.2 million Mike Pucillo -- $380,000 Bobby Shaw -- $850,000 Marques Sullivan -- $455,000 Trey Teague -- $1.5 million Ross Tucker -- $500,000 If the numbers are right, I think the Bills should cut Prioleau, Shaw and one of Gildon and Posey. The others don't really give us salary savings (relative to their talent). Cutting those three would give us an extra $3.2 million or so. The savings can really help us redo a contract for Jonas or Schoebel (or worst case, Williams) this year, since we'll give them more money now, when we can afford it, in order to extend their term with the Bills.
Mark VI Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Cut our starting Center, OLB and Kicker. That should make us stronger.
John from Riverside Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Based on those numbers I think Preston P., Bobby S., and Jason G. are definate goners....... Somebody is going to get a pretty good receiver in Shaw for a fairly cheap price......
RunTheBall Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 These cap savings can be realized by cutting them after the end of the season. You aren't going to cut your starting linebacker in Posey, your starting kicker in Lindell, or a solid veteran backup in Shaw. Maybe Shaw goes after the season, but he's not going to be cut before the start of this one. There is no magic free agent out there right now who will put us over the top. There's no reason to have cap savings this year when you will redo contracts that effect next year. I think Jennings and Williams get resigned, Shoebel is gone. RunTheBall

Rico Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 There is no magic free agent out there right now who will put us over the top. 5170 Agreed, at least not yet.

Someone is going to pay him some big bucks (assuming he does well this year) that are far greater than his worth, kind of like Antoine Winfield. I think Jennings will be the priority, and Pat will resign. We'll see how Sam Adams does this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see him gone after the season. I'm not a big believer in Shoebel. He's not bad, but I think he gets a lot of garbage sacks. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong and be a game changer this year. RunTheBall

LABILL Posted August 23, 2004 Author Posted August 23, 2004 5222 There may not be valuable free agents, but I was talking about getting those cap savings with cuts and using them to redo Jonas and/or Schoebel's contracts by giving them more this year. For example, resign Jonas by giving him an additional $3.2 million this year and extending the contract.
/dev/null Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 Justin Bannan -- $400,000 $400k for a vet DT isn't that big a cap hit and any savings by going with a younger player is negligible. If JB is cut, its due to performance and not to $$$ Antonio Brown -- $325,000 Again, cap cost/savings is negligible and if cut its due to his performance (or lack thereof) Angelo Crowell -- $305,000 Not gonna cut a 2nd year 3rd round pick. Even if we did the cap savings/cost again are negligible Keith McKenzie -- $450,000 Again, negligible savings/cost. Ryan Nuefeld -- $455,000 You're just looking for a reason to keep Peters, aren't you? Mike Pucillo -- $380,000 Yes he sucks, but he's affordable Marques Sullivan -- $455,000 Just signed a contract this offseason, so he will likely count more on this years cap if we kept him Ross Tucker -- $500,000 Not a bad OLineman and at an affordable cost. Savings/cost is negligible if we cut him or keep him Jason Gildon -- $1.2 million We'd take a slight cap hit this year and next for no reason other than TD wanting to hang out with an old buddy? Ryan Lindell -- $790,000 Don't think RLs bonus is big enough that we'd take too serious a cap hit. The only problem is finding a reliable kicker. Granted RL isn't that reliable either, but i feel better with him than that camp fodder guy whose name i don't remember. Shafer? Jeff Posey -- $1.05 million Yeah, lets cut our starting OLB and start preseason stud Asa Francis to save a couple bucks Trey Teague -- $1.5 million TD exercised an option giving TT a nice fat bonus that cutting TT would hurt our cap more than help it Bobby Shaw -- $850,000 May see some cap savings if we cut him Pierson Prioleau -- $1.2 million PP and Shaw are probably the only players on this list whose presence may not be missed (dependng on Reese/Baker/Wire) and whose departure may help on the cap.
Typical TBD Guy Posted August 24, 2004 Posted August 24, 2004 What are we trying to save money for? Contract talks with our big 3 UFA's are over. All 3 are going to play out the season and test the free agent waters. Cutting Posey??? You lost all credibility with that suggestion.
