VABills
So what... Gas is already 4 bucks... let them drive it up to 10. People will have to pay or push will come to shove. Yup, and then oil companies make less profit, no longer under the windfall tax. Then the government will have all these neat new programs in the hopper they are spending the trillions in windfall taxes on, and no longer able to afford them, so they raise general and business taxes so every 15 year old can have their constitutionally mandated cell phone, car, and health care. Chilly
No big deal. Come on... The old Riddler can't have you stumped? I am too simple. Just pay your taxes and suck it up! They can't have you that scared... You think that I'm not for change? Hell, I'm all about change, just not the type that the Republicans or Democrats want to implement. I also understand that you need to try your best to understand the consequences of instituting a policy decision before you attempt it, not just install it and see how it works. I realize that its important to NOT completely screw up the American economy.
PastaJoe
Do you honestly think that the oil company's wont pass this tax down to the end user? They have to protect their stock holders. Time to nationalize the oil companies. Give all the stockholders $80 a share and a free carwash, and turn the oil companies into Not For Profit corporations. bills_fan
True, and both parties have devolved into partisan bickering over this issue. Last week, the Senate rejected a Republican bill that would open up areas of ANWR and costal areas in certain states for drilling. This week, the Republicans block a Democratic measure that would have contained a windfall profits tax (bad) and placed limits on traders' ability to speculate without committing more of their own assets (good). So both sides present some viable alternatives, add in some dealbusters that will assuredly force the other side to kill the deal, just to place blame. Meanwhile, gas prices rocket towards $5, I just paid $832 for 200 gallons of home heating oil in the offseason, and American consumers are f*cked. Hence the reason I am against any bill to increase the size of government in any way, shape or form, without first making corresponding cuts. Fuggin' ridiculous. DC Tom
I have always considered myself a "New Dealer" type... And yes, those ideas have worked. Unless, you believe we as a nation would be better served right now pushing the clock back to 1929... Be my guest... So your solution to the current economic climate is...ten years of depression and a world war?

We got 2 free "Firecracker Jr." popsicles from the Indian guy behind the register yesterday with a $150 fill-up (several gas cans). Yes sir, the marginal perks are what make it all worth it. PastaJoe
HOLY SHIIT, JOE!! Ok. I'm calmed down now. You're kidding, right? Capitalism is overrated, the gap between rich and poor is growing. The major corporations give us the illusion that we have equal economic opportunity, and try to pacify us with cheaper Tupperware at Walmart, but it's all smoke and mirrors. I think it's time we try some socialism.

I think it's time we try some socialism. Really what do you do for a living? Do you make more than your parents did? Do you think the CEO's, CFO's of these companies were born rich and just given the keys. How many of the F500 companies didn't even exist 50 years ago? The poor get poorer mostly through choice. The rich get richer through choice. If you want to work at the steel plant because your dad, granddad did that's up to you. But you have your head in the sand if you didn't see the demise of the industry. The unions are a big problem in this country and the union mentaility of people having soeme kind of job for life guanantee. Well that concept in reality is long gone. Socialism doesn't work just ask China, Cuba, Russia, etc... People get what they work for and part of that work means to constantly reinvent and learn new things. Just because 30 years ag you were the best damn buddy whip maker in the country doesn't mean 30 years later there is a viable market for buggy whips. The government and the buggy whip industry should have to continue paying you great wages just because you are good at an antiquated skill that is no longer required. Chilly
Then Obama is your man, Joe. I always thought you were a closet Socialist. Thanks for coming out of your Marxist closet. The real question is, will we add another chapter to the Bible for the Obamessiah, like Jessie Jackson suggested? "The event itself is so extraordinary that another chapter could be added to the Bible to chronicle its significance.”
blzrul
Then Obama is your man, Joe. I always thought you were a closet Socialist. Thanks for coming out of your Marxist closet. I hate to break it to you but this country is socialist in a number of aspects since we all use a number of shared services and facilities provided by the government. Taking over an industry is not the sole bailiwick of socialism.
blzrul
By the way in the last four decades there have been 12 years of Democratic presidency and 28 years of Republicans. So when you complain about this country going to shirt and making rash statements about ideas proffered by the Democratic side of the aisle perhaps you ought to stop and wonder a bit. ExiledInIllinois
Which ideas of the new deal would apply successfully to the current energy situation? We are fighting a war that many have equated to being just like WWII... Not exactly a New Deal item as it was a war item... How about rationing gas? Ya, like that would really float. Like Tom said... We have the war part... And if it wasn't for the mega GDP we would be in a full blown depression.
