June Movies: WALL-E, Hulk, Happening, Wanted, Panda & Zohan...

Recommended Posts

With the conclusion of the giant month of May, the box office industry is in a state of confusion. Paramount hit it big with Indiana Jones doing great as expected, while Iron Man exceeded the distributor's dreams. However, Warner Bros. Speed Racer crashed and burned, and Disney's Prince Caspian has underwhelmed tremendously. Even though Sex and the City had huge numbers it's first week, will that translate into longevity? Each of this films opened with no or barely any competition. Now the month of June comes in with plenty of movie offerings. Each week will have at least 2 big names going against each other. With schools closing soon, more and more people will be filling the multiplexes with so many different titles.

Disney will be looking for a lot of those kids to head their way with the latest film from Pixar, "WALL-E". The month of June has always been a big one for Disney, and this month will be no different. They have recently had big success with the last two Pixar offerings(Cars & Ratatouille) being released this time of year, so you can bet that the third time around will be no different. "WALL-E" is the story of a robot, a Waste Allocation Load Lifter-Earth class. When all of civilization abandons Earth, WALL-E is still left to perform his duties of cleaning up. For the next 700 years he does what he was built for, but soon, he will discover what he was meant for. Disney and Pixar are being more daring in this venture in having their main characters speak with only electronic sounds instead of voices. While there are a few human characters with voices, the majority of this film will be pantomime. While some pundits have complained that the robot looks too much like Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, Disney and Pixar are not concerned, simply stating that WALL-E is nothing like Johnny 5.

After 5 years of waiting, the not-so-jolly-green-giant returns to the big screen, in "The Incredible Hulk". However this film is not being touted as a sequel to the first Hulk movie. A new director, and new cast want to give this character a new start. Bruce Banner takes flight in order to understand -- and hopefully cure -- that the condition that turns him into a monster. Complicating his situation is the military initiative that wants him captured and controlled, as well as the arrival of a more-deadly nemesis: The Abomination. Edward Norton is Banner, Liv Tyler is Betty Ross, Tim Roth is Emil Blonsky, & William Hurt is Thunderbolt Ross. Also, keep an eye out for Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark.

After the bad reception his Lady in the Water received, M. Night Shyamalan is back with his first "R" rated feature, "The Happening". As usual Shyamalan is being tight lipped about the plot. The basic premis is, A family is on the run after a natural disaster threatens the entire planet. Some are speculating that the natural disaster in this film is the environment, since this film was originally titled "The Green Effect". Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, and John Leguizamo star.

With the success of his fantasy/horror films Night Watch & Day Watch, Russian director Timur Bekmembetov makes his first english language & American movie, "Wanted". The tale follows Wesley Gibson an apathetic nobody who is transformed into an unparalleled enforcer of justice, with the help of an elite group of assassins. James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, Angelina Jolie, and Terence Stamp star.

Dreamworks gets the early animation jump on Disney with it's computer animated movie "Kung Fu Panda". The story of Po, a reluctant panda bear, is recruited by a team of Kung Fu masters and trained in the ways of the ancient martial art in order to protect the Valley of Peace from an evil snow leopard. With the voice talents of Jack Black, Ian McShane, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, & Michael Clarke Duncan.

Aside from the animation there are 3 live action comedies with 3 big comedic stars, coming out as well.

Adam Sandler stars in "You Do'nt Mess With the Zohan". About a Mossad agent who orchestrates a scenario that will allow him to move to New York City and reinvent himself as a hairstylist. John Turturro & Emmanuelle Chriqui co-star.

Steve Carell stars in "Get Smart". Based on the 60's tv spy-comedy of the same name, Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 at his side. Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin, Dwayne Johnson & Terence Stamp co-star.

Mike Myers is "The Love Guru". Pitka, an American raised outside of his country by gurus, returns to the States in order to break into the self-help business. Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Romany Malco, & Verne Troyer co-star.

Thanks as always, Mark.

I saw a couple of the recent Indies...I'll comment when you post about them.

P.S. Don't forget to see Stardust. It might be at the rental outfits by now. Charming flick. The Director, film crew and the cast all did a bang-up job.
