John Deere mowers are some of the best, most reliable in the world, and most expensive, bar none. It will probably run a long time time as long as you keep oil in it. Having said that, and I don't know what the value of the model you bought, $1100 sounds like a really good deal for a John Deere. Since oil is the life blood of your engine, it seems like a wise investment to get at least an estimate for repair of the leak. With reasonable care and maintenance, it will last another 10 years or more, so probably worth putting some money in it to prevent an engine failure. If this is one of the shiny JD's that you see in front of Home Depot or Lowe's, etc., these are not built de facto by JD. Those are pretty generic ones that JD gets paid to put their name on and use their colors. Usually B&S engine. Not bad machines per se, but they're not "John Deere"s. We got an old JD 210 model and the mower deck is sh--, but we're using it to drag timber on a wood lot. Could be nicer looking, but it's got some balls. I was wondering how they (HD and Lowe's) were getting away with that and still seeing independent JD shops around... Thanks!

stuckincincy
I was wondering how they (HD and Lowe's) were getting away with that and still seeing independent JD shops around... Thanks! They were getting away with nothing. Just a business deal selling a logo...If folks can't see that their lineup of MTD's, Troy-Builts, Cub Cadets etc. are the same thing, shame on them. Fact is, those products in general do the job asked of them. Their build quality, motors are suitable for the task. When they fail to give good service, its' usually because only a small percentage of buyers read the instruction/maintenance manual, and fewer still actually follow it.
