and hope he gets to make the playoffs before he hangs em' up. Heck, I'd love for him to come back as insurance should Crowell think he's worth mega bucks and an awesome backup. Probably has too much pride though........

Man those Achilles injuries are career killers. I think that Julian Peterson is the only guy to ever come back from one and play at the same level as before. It's a shame the Bills only got about 3 years out of Cowart before he suffered his. He could have been a perennial Pro Bowler for them.

Had he not gotten injured (while with the Bills), they never would have let him go in the first place.

They might have... he didnt fit the system and i remember him saying he didnt feel comfortable in the cover two system. Trading takeo was a bit of a salery dump while the bills were maing the transition to their current defense

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought we were running Williams' 46 defensive scheme, not a cover 2 back then.

I think he was uncomfortable with sliding to the outside.

He was never mobile to begin with, but you are correct.

They were talking about Cowart, I believe.

Yeah we were running the 46, with the absolute worst compilation of 46 personnel ever. I doubt we would've re-signed Cowart, he was not a Donahoe guy. Donahoe only liked Donahoe guys, I can't remember him re-signing anybody from the previous regime at ANY point(although I can't remember when Moulds signed his deal) . We let Antoine Winfield and Pat Wiliams walk. Cut Ruben because he didn't get along with the coaching staff/administration anymore. Meanwhile Ruben signs with the Bears and plays at a respectable level for another few years while we fill his place with scrubs like Bennie Anderson and Tutan Reyes. Brilliant.

The point is that I think its unlikely we would've kept Cowart, who earned a pretty hefty payday in spite of the fact that he was coming off of a major injury.

As for Spikes, I think his situation could fit under any of the following categories:

1- Expects to make more than the vet minimum.

2- Is pondering retirement(unlikely, Spikes seems like the kind of player who will play until his skills erode past the point of competitiveness. More likely he hasn't generated much interest)

3- He is still rehabbing his shoulder and teams are waiting until he is healthy again to kick his tires.

I'd say the most likely scenario is #3.

One of TD's first moves as the new Bills GM was deciding between re-signing Marcellus Wiley or Eric Moulds. Both were pretty young and coming off good seasons, but only one could be re-signed, because of the cap mess Butler left, and TD chose Moulds. Had Cowart not suffered the Achilles, and given his age and the improved cap status, I think the Bills/TD would have re-signed him. In the case of Winfield, although he was good and young, the Vikes were offering him mad money (I believe he received an $8M roster bonus) and the Bills didn't believe he was worth it.

Actually I never thought he was the same all-time great after that Cleveland game (still above average of course).

Regardless, if you have to go back 14 years to find an example that kinda emphasizes the point.
