Dawgg Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 - Similar to Darryl Tapp - Lots of talent, but questionable/inconsistent effort - Fits the 4-3 defense well - Scout said he just needs to "put it all together"

BuffaloBilliever Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 The Darryl Tapp reference made me happy, cause I wanted him badly in that draft.
jahbonas Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 - Similar to Darryl Tapp- Lots of talent, but questionable/inconsistent effort - Fits the 4-3 defense well - Scout said he just needs to "put it all together" Chris Ellis Compares To: SIMEON RICE, ex-Tampa Bay, Denver, Indianapolis...Ellis isn't a natural end like the former first-round pick from Illinois. But he has an explosive initial step off the snap and the quickness to take a wide loop and chase down the quarterback. He has the ability to clear his feet and move laterally down the line, good hand punch to control isolated blockers and is a good leverage player vs. the run. Like Rice, Ellis seems more concerned about getting to the quarterback than doing the "little things" to improve his overall game. With his foot speed, he could see action as a linebacker in a 3-4 alignment. He will need time to develop needed muscle mass and bulk to be a down lineman at the next level. Still, there are inconsistencies in his game, most notably a motor that is not always running, along with some poor judgment, both on and off the field. Virginia Tech has failed to produce NFL-quality at defensive end since Bruce Smith in 1985 (Darryl Tapp of Seattle is another on the rise), but with his athletic ability and quickness, Ellis is worth a look early in the draft even if he's not first-round material

Astrobot Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Thank God! Finally a D-Line guy without a "nonstop motor"!
DrDawkinstein Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Hopefully Perry can lit a fire under his belly...... if there is one thing i trust in, its this coaching staff's ability to get players to play
Typical TBD Guy Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Anyone have more info on his right shoulder injury? I don't know about this pick. Our last 3rd round VTech DE with character issues didn't work out so well (Corey Moore, 2000 draft).
Brandon Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Anyone have more info on his right shoulder injury? I don't know about this pick. Our last 3rd round VTech DE with character issues didn't work out so well (Corey Moore, 2000 draft). Yeah, but Corey Moore was 5'11 230lbs and was trying to move to OLB.
Ramius Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 - Similar to Darryl Tapp- Lots of talent, but questionable/inconsistent effort - Fits the 4-3 defense well - Scout said he just needs to "put it all together" I like the pick. strengthens the line, and hopefully, a starter in a year or 2. not to mention he brings some more needed size to the DE spot.
colin Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 he got over his shoulder well. kid is raw power speed and talent -- exactly what we need. consider him a bigger more explosive less suspended hargrove. we now have 3 DEs, 3DTs, and two guys that can go inside or outside.
KD in CA Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 From what I've read, he looks like the pass rusher we could really use. I have no problem with the pick. Agreed. Everyone picked on day 2 is going to have flaws and things that need to be improved upon to make them a successful pro. This guy's weaknesses seem like things than can be fixed by good coaching. And DL was clearly the biggest need for the Bills at this point.
MarkyMannn Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Anyone have more info on his right shoulder injury? I don't know about this pick. Our last 3rd round VTech DE with character issues didn't work out so well (Corey Moore, 2000 draft). There was a first round VT DE that needed Hank Bullough's motivation. He worked out OK
BenchBledsoe Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I like the pick. strengthens the line, and hopefully, a starter in a year or 2. not to mention he brings some more needed size to the DE spot. I really like this pick too. See, I don't dislike every pick, like you wrote earlier. Two reasons I like it: Pass-rushing ability . . . and he's not white!!!
Gotta Dream Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 He must have some serious athletic ability to be mentioned as a possible OLB in the pros. With some bulk, could he play the gap DT as well?
Lurker Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 Kelsay will be packing his bags mid-season. Absolutely not. This is Hargrove's replacement.
Brandon Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I especially like the NFL.com comparison...Simeon Rice. If he turns out remotely close to that level, I think we did alright.
obie_wan Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I like the pick. strengthens the line, and hopefully, a starter in a year or 2. not to mention he brings some more needed size to the DE spot. chance are that he will never be a starter. but if he can generate pressure as a 3rd down specialist - he is worth the 3rd rounder

Plus there's been a run on DEs in the 3rd Round. The Bills need to get more pressure off the edge and this kid can play, trust me. Now I'd like to see them get TE Martin Rucker from Missouri.
Brandon Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 chance are that he will never be a starter. but if he can generate pressure as a 3rd down specialist - he is worth the 3rd rounder I don't know about that. He's been a multi-year starter in one of the best defensive programs in college football. He's been very productive. He has the size to start, plus he graded out very well at the combine. The point is, on paper, he seems to have all the prerequisites you look for in a potential starter at that position.
