Berni Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Baker: http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/rashad_baker OVERVIEW Team captain with a knack for making big plays in big games … Recruited as a wide receiver, he was shifted to free safety in 2000 fall camp, proceeding to start 41 of 45 games during his career … Recorded 233 tackles (174 solos) with two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 22 pass deflections … His 11 interceptions rank 11th on the school's career-record list … Also excelled on special teams, returning 62 punts for 544 yards (8.8 avg.). ANALYSIS Positives: Has good thickness and muscle tone throughout his frame, possessing wide shoulders, thin waist and high calves … Plays with good field vision, showing the speed in his backpedal and balance in his turns to break on the ball … Has the range to cover ground quickly and displays the leaping ability to make plays on the ball in the air … Has natural hands and good concentration to make the interception. Negatives: Not effective in man coverage, as he spends too much time peeking into the backfield, causing him to get beaten by the receivers coming off the line … Seems to lack the desire to support vs. the run, as he's hesitant to step up and would rather wait for the play to come to him than initiate contact … More of a drag-down tackler who will throw himself at ball carriers rather that wrapping and securing … Handled punt return duties the last three years, but is not recommended to have him do this at the next level. Greer: http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/jabari_greer OVERVIEW Three-year starter who was the playmaker in the Volunteers secondary … Carried on the school's tradition of standout two-sport stars, as he also excelled in track, breaking the old school record in the 110-meter hurdles (11.34) that was previously owned by gridiron great Willie Gault … Also set a school record by appearing in 51 games … Closed out his career with 147 tackles (119 solos), 3½ sacks for minus-26 yards, 11½ stops for losses of 70 yards, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble, two interceptions and 33 pass deflections while starting 34 times. ANALYSIS Positives: Has outstanding quickness with adequate upper body strength, good lower body explosion and the leaping ability to elevate off the ground to get to the ball at its high point … Quick to diagnose and break down the play, showing a good straight-line burst to plays in front of him … Fluid in his backpedal, playing with adequate vision working in the zone … Despite his slight size, he fights through blocks to make tackles near the line of scrimmage … Shows enough strength as a wrap-up tackler to bring the receiver down when working in space. Negatives: Undersized with a frail "track man's" frame … Dedication to track makes one question his desire to play football (had success early in his career, but play has tapered off since) … His lack of size poses problems in handling the larger receivers, as he will not be able to compete vs. the high passes … Has outstanding speed in his backpedal, but tightness in his hips makes him gather himself a bit before breaking on the ball … Gives too much cushion on deep routes, relying too much on his speed to recover (plays too soft, allowing the receiver to get a free release) … Makes plays in front of him, but has trouble locating and making plays on the ball in flight (peeks into the backfield too much and struggles to look the ball in over his shoulder).
MadBuffaloDisease Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 This could turn out to be a great draft, depending on Evans and Anderson showing something sooner rather than later. To have 3 UDFA's make this team (Baker, Greer, and Peters) would be impressive.
