Mike formerly from Florida Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 If the Bills are to compete this year, they must do some house-cleaning and draft players who will make an impact now... 1) Trade JP--he does not deserve a chance to start. He has had three chances and it's time to part ways--get a fifth round pick and the other team's cutest cheerleaders. 2)DO NOT DRAFT A CB--I don't think the Bills' will. This obsession rampant on the board is mindboggling--I just don't see the need. The corners played well--the middle of the defense is where the pass coverage was weak last year. 3)Draft VERNON GHOLSTEN--He will be the best pass rusher in the draft. If the Bills don't want to give away picks, then draft Rivers and use him on third downs. 4)A dependable pass-catching TE is more important than a wide receiver. Although my gut feeling is the Bills like Shouman. 5)We can select two receivers later in the draft and get near quality with the best in this weak receiver draft. Hopefully, one of the two pans out. 6)Draft the highest rated center and start him on September 7. The Bills will never consistently run the ball with Fowler--I'm tired of looking a the ten man pile-ups with Marshawn moving the pile himself. 7)Get rid of JP...oh I said that already.

Trading JP for a draft pick does little to help this team compete in 08. I like my fellow fans love the draft because it is over-hyped fun, but the idea that we should depend on or expect help to come this year from players acquired in this crapshoot is fun to dream about but really is little more than a dream. Unless the Bills can acquire a back-up QB vet who can play the Frank Reich role simply getting rid of JP because someone does not like his face is a bad football idea.

How do you propose we get Gholsten... He will be long gone by 11. He could be the 1st pick in the draft.
BillnutinHouston Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 If you trade JP, who is your backup QB? You do know that backup QB's play an awful lot in this league, right?
Tim Anderson's Lunch Pail Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 How do you propose we get Gholsten... He will be long gone by 11. He could be the 1st pick in the draft. Yeah, I plan on the Bills drafting Gholston, Ellis, McKelvin and Sweed. I'm not sure how, but that's what I'm thinking. Pretty sweet, huh?
JStranger76 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 I totally don't get the Schouman love around here. The guy caught like one pass last year and stumbled for like 8 yards. Wow. I guess it's called lack of quality recieving TE syndrome. I doubt he even makes the team without the H-Back role.
MattyT Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Yeah, I plan on the Bills drafting Gholston, Ellis, McKelvin and Sweed. I'm not sure how, but that's what I'm thinking. Pretty sweet, huh? Easy. Trade Schobel, Stroud, McGee and Evans....plus a lot of next year's draft picks.

Chilly Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 If the Bills are to compete this year, they must do some house-cleaning and draft players who will make an impact now... How many players from the draft really have an immediate impact each year? 1) Trade JP--he does not deserve a chance to start. He has had three chances and it's time to part ways--get a fifth round pick and the other team's cutest cheerleaders. I agree that getting rid of JP for something would be beneficial, but he does have SOME value as a backup. If we could trade JP for a 4th, and then trade a 5th or 6th for a veteran backup, I could see such a scenario working. 2)DO NOT DRAFT A CB--I don't think the Bills' will. This obsession rampant on the board is mindboggling--I just don't see the need. The corners played well--the middle of the defense is where the pass coverage was weak last year. There were two issues with CB play last year. The first, and somewhat less important problem was coverage vs tall receivers. McGee and Greer did everything they could to knock the ball away, but when you got a tall receiver going for a jump ball in the end-zone vs one of our CBs, it was likely (not always) a touchdown. The second, and far bigger worry, is the run support from the CBs. While television is an imperfect viewing mechanism, it seemed like running backs ran all over the defense, including much of the time outside against the corners, who are responsible for run coverage in that area. We need to get stronger from the CB position against the run. 3)Draft VERNON GHOLSTEN--He will be the best pass rusher in the draft. If the Bills don't want to give away picks, then draft Rivers and use him on third downs. Vernon is going to be drafted top 5 in all likelyhood, and thus I doubt that the Bills would give up picks and the money to take him at that selection, though i could be wrong. It is also possible that Rivers goes to another team in the top 10 before the Bills. That being said, I'd rather address one of our other areas of need, with one of the CBs at #11, or Sweed at #11, or possibly a DL or OL if they have one rated higher. I'd like even better to move back a few picks, then take Sweed. 4)A dependable pass-catching TE is more important than a wide receiver. Although my gut feeling is the Bills like Shouman. Not necessarily. It depends on the players involved, the offense you are playing, and the defensive scheme that you are going up against. 5)We can select two receivers later in the draft and get near quality with the best in this weak receiver draft. Hopefully, one of the two pans out. It might be a "weak" draft as there are no clear cut forces that will scare defenses, but this "weak" draft is going to be solid overall on the field. There are a lot of good, dependable wideouts in this draft. While none may be barn burners or overly amazing athletically, or even a star in the league, there will be multiple solid players for many, many years at the WR spot in this draft. What you lose with the players later in the draft is the solid all-around game. They may have a specialty - such as being extremely fast, having extremely good hands, being extremely shifty, etc., but none of them have decent skills in all of this. You also lose a lot of consistency and dependability. 6)Draft the highest rated center and start him on September 7. The Bills will never consistently run the ball with Fowler--I'm tired of looking a the ten man pile-ups with Marshawn moving the pile himself. This is a very weak center draft. Pollack is the only decent one on the board, and even he is not very good. I actually think it would be better to put up with Fowler for a year, let Trent Edwards have some resemblance of consistency, and then replace Fowler next year when there are (hopefully) better players available at the position.

Where do I even start. You always need more/better CBs. Getting rid of JP won't be addition by subtraction, you are as irrational as those who think JP is the next all-pro, neither he nor Edwards "deserves" to start. Draft the highest rated center and start him? I don't see one in the draft that I think is better than Fowler. I don't see any high round TE's either. As an Ohio State fan I can't begin to tell you how overrated Gholston is. Sorry, the front office's job is to make the team better, not to make sure everyone on the roster is a fan favorite
K-9 Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 Rivers had 0 sacks last year, yeah 0. He's hardly a pass rushing specialist. You may wish to visit some game tapes of USC from the last two years. That will help explain the sack totals. FWIW, Rivers is widely considered the best COVERAGE LB coming out this year as well. But with his physical gifts I don't see him having a problem coming hard off the edge as a pass rusher. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Patsies end up with him because he is so versatile. GO BILLS!!!

You can have your "coverage linebackers"...... pick #11 in the draft IMHO is reserved for taking explosive playmaking linebackers. Not "coverage linebackers". Maybe you don't see him having a problem coming off the edge as a pass rusher, but apparently the coaching staff at USC did. 0 interceptions, 0 sacks. Let's see where he ends up, I see him falling in this draft. We will know on Saturday.
Dawgg Posted April 22, 2008 Posted April 22, 2008 idea that we should depend on or expect help to come this year from players acquired in this crapshoot is fun to dream about but really is little more than a dream. Did you watch the Giants' Super Bowl run? Steve Smith, Aaron Ross, and Kevin Boss made key plays and played critical roles in their SB run. Did you watch the Packers turnaround season last year? They had a few rookie starters on both sides of the ball. Perhaps you consider the draft a crapshoot because the Bills frankly haven't been very good drafters in the past 10 years... whatever the reason may be, I think you're wrong.

I hear ya regarding 'coverage' LBs and I'm certainly not advocating taking Rivers because he's a good coverage LB. Although it doesn't hurt to have an LB that can do both. I mention his coverage ability because it underscores his great athleticism. The USC staff had a problem with him coming off the edge? No. They simply didn't ask him to do it because they generated enough pressure with their front four and they LOVED his coverage ability. Teams rarely threw in his direction. That was my point about looking at the game tapes. I wouldn't expect to see sack stats when I didn't ask him to do what's needed to get them. If he does end up sliding out of the top 10, it'll be interesting to see what happens. I gotta think the Bills and teams behind him have ranked in the top 10 on their boards. At the very least, if the Bills don't take him, it'll add another player teams will be willing to trade up to get. GO BILLS!!!
Mike formerly from Florida Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 Thank god you don't work for the bills Yes, because all I said makes no sense. Some of these players will have to make an impact if the Bills are going to the playoffs...that is not such an outrageous thought. The Bills have very little margin to make mistakes. 1. You all ripped my comments because half of you are enamored with a losing QB. But the point is, he will be a distraction at best and will thwart TE's progress looking over his back constantly. Again, Get rid of him. I think we can manage to find a back-up. 2. You all exagerated what I was proposing: Gholsten is projected going six. One says he's over-rated yet another one says he's potential #1. Which is it? I said if the Bills don't want to give up their picks (I didn't say they had to--it was a proposal), Rivers was another option. It was mentioned by other "mock gurus" that Rivers could be a solid pass-rusher in the NFL. I personally like Gholsten as making the most impact from Day 1...you don't like it, fine...I'm entitled to my opinion...this is an opinion board last I heard. 3. You want your cornerbacks--go for it. I'll stick with my opinion. Hi-Risk/little return---least impact. 4. All of a sudden drafting a center in the mid-rounds like Justice/Sullivan is a bad idea. As if these guys don't have a chance to beat out Melvin. Melvin, the pile-driver...right? 5. Drafting two receivers later in the draft (mid-rounds--not six or seven) and coming out with one receiver is not a bad strategy. As one other poster noted, it is a solid draft, just no blue-chippers. Well, then that would support my argument. I look for your friendly responses once again.
Mike formerly from Florida Posted April 22, 2008 Author Posted April 22, 2008 Yeah, I plan on the Bills drafting Gholston, Ellis, McKelvin and Sweed. I'm not sure how, but that's what I'm thinking. Pretty sweet, huh? Yes, use an exaggerated example of extreme sarcasm to mock my opinion-proposal. Then again you do call yourself Tim Anderson--you much of an underachiever in life?

So when the Bills draft immediate contributors and starters, as they have done the past 2 years, its because we suck that bad. But when GB and the NYG do it, its because "they are good drafters." Theres a huge difference between getting timely contributions from rookies, and relying on them game in and game out. NYG used the former last season.
