1979 Draft far better

1- Tom Cousineaue - trade for Kelly pick

1a- Jerry Butler

2a- Fred Smerlas

3b-Jim Haslett

Jeff Nixon

Baby Johnson

Butler & Haslett won AFC offensive and defensive rookies of year

Jeff Nixon won def player of month as a rookie - ended up getting knee hurt

1985

both 2nd rd picks were busts Burkett and Tranawicz

3rd 3a/3b picks never started

thats 4 straight picks not getting a starter

Think the 87 draft had more to do with the super bowl teams than 85, though obviously both were important. Especially if you add that we got Bennett out of the 87 draft.

1987 might have netted more players but you can't deny the impact that Smith and Reed netted. They were two franchise players which don't think would have gone to the 4 Super Bowls without. I'm just glad Polian was under control can only imagine how bad we would have been had we taken Fluite first overall instead.

The 1987 draft was not great....Bennet was done in a trade that virtually stole from the 1988 and 1989 drafts....you do not include Bennet as part of the 1987 draft......even tho he was from that class....

Many of those were the days where you could get a solid player deep in the draft that no one else knew jack sh-- about. Success depended on how good your gumshoe scouts were.

How about the Vikes drafting Buster Rymes WR one pick before Reed in the 4th round?

Forget the future HOFer, with a name like Buster Rymes how can you NOT take him.

Does anyone else find it hilarious that Ralph Wilson wanted to draft Flutie with the #1 overall pick in that draft, then ended up benching him in a playoff game for no apparent reason 14 years later. Kind of ironic.
