For those of you interested in the beginnings of the NFL and the WNY ties, there is an article on the Rochester Jeffersons in today's Rochester D&C.

Good job. Were the owners cheapskates back then too?

In relative terms, no. There was a lot less money to play with and it was rare if a team was able to make money each season. Most of the time, they lost money due to paying player salaries. They were more than generous with salaries in order to keep the better players.

Interestingly enough, within a few hours after this article came out, I was contacted by two family members of Jeffersons players.

Great stuff as usual, KRC.

So, are you J. Steffenhaggen, Bob Carroll or Geoge Clooney? :P

People always confuse me with George Clooney. It is an easy mistake to make.

The Rochester of yore sounds no different than the Rochester of today. They didn't support the local team because too many players were from the wrong side of the Genesee, and there probably was a golf match that day too. They don't call it Smugtown for nothing.

Outstanding, Ken, and well worth the shameless plug.

One minor fact-check, though. Here's the D&C feature:

In reel life, Connelly signs college football superstar Carter Rutherford, whose fictional character played by John Krasinski is based loosely on Johnny Blood, a dashing player on and off the field from the Roaring Twenties.

Here's what Duncan Brantley, who came up with the idea and co-wrote the script with Rick Reilly, said in this week's SI:

Dodge Connelly, based on Johnny Blood and played by Clooney in the film, survives on raw athleticism and instinct. The younger Carter Rutherford, a fictional character played by John Krasinski, succeeds through hard work and determination.

I was wondering if you would catch that. <_<

As for another shameless plug, PFRA member TJ Troup was the technical adviser for the movie.
