volleydog123 Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Would it have been ok for Bush to point out during his tenure obesity is now a disease and may be covered by Medicare and say now people like the VP candidates wife can now get help with gov't assistance. Would that cross a line?
blzrul Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Not if Edwards himself had already brought up his wife's weight during a town hall meeting, as Dick Cheney did in discussing his daughter's sexual orientation when he himself stated that he was breaking with Bush on the gay marriage thing. It was notable in that it was the first time he publicly made the admission in a campaign context, although of course it's well known (and who really cares). Don't open Pandora's box, the lid is hard to get back on.

Would that cross a line? 70390 I don't think very much crosses the line if it's the truth, the family has thrust themselves into the public figure status, and the issue its brought up about is affected by public policy. Yup, DC's daughter's a lesbian. Yup, Edwards' wife is overweight (is she really 'obese' by definition?). And, maybe you're onto something. Providing medical care for obesity early on can save a lot of money in the future, when the people in their 60s+ and on MediCare develop the diseases that are associated with it. Just like pre-natal screening saves $6 for every dollar spent. You guys talk about reducing the federal budget, these are baby steps to the day when we can say, okay we don't need these programs anymore b/c people are in better health. $2.5T - $.5T = $2T. Baby steps, and we'll get to a time when we can have the same standard of living w/o having to make so many transfer payments.

This way, liberals (while drinking alcohol) would not have to smell smoke, nor look at those awful fat persons that they find unpleasant to the eye. After all, liberals are just in their quest for behavioral control. Next? Incarcerate (or at LEAST heavily tax) fast food consumers. It is only fitting that leftists should dictate the diet of America. Great post!!!!! Thanks for caring so much. PSP: Starbucks and caffiene addiction are great, and should be left alone.
OGTEleven Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Yup, Edwards' wife is overweight (is she really 'obese' by definition?). 70741 This is OT, but I think she'd qualify. This doesn't mean I view her as "obese" but some people I know have been classified as such in their physicals and to me appear only mildly overweight. I think the common view and the clinical definition are different. And, maybe you're onto something. Either that or we can sue McDonald's, Hostess, Ben and Jerry until we put them out of business. Remember, destroying private enterprise is alsmost as good as putting the government in charge of everything. Baby steps.
RunTheBall Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Oh but wait, obesity is a disease. It's not her fault, its not the result of her own choices. There's the new "healthy fat person" didn't you hear? You can be obese and healthy at the same time. Star Jones talked about it all the time in between wheezing (and before her gastric bypass). If you don't feel like taking care of yourself, just let yourself go until you are over 3 bills, then the rest of us (through medicare) will cover your gastric bypass surgery. Since 4 out of every 100 people who have a gastric bypass will die in the peri-operative period, we'll have Edwards there to sue your obviously negligent doctor. RunTheBall

Chalkie Gerzowski Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Wasn't Elizabeth Edwards in that "Shallow Hal" movie?
Peter Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Her teenage son died in a car Rosen a few years ago. I think that has something to do with it.
Alaska Darin Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Her teenage son died in a car Rosen a few years ago. I think that has something to do with it. 71722 So she started eating cars?
Peter Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 So she started eating cars? 71727 I half expected a comment like that from you. You did not disappoint me.
Alaska Darin Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 I half expected a comment like that from you. You did not disappoint me. 71746 Why start now? Why is it that women never seem to react to things they can't control by eating less and exercising more? I guess it all goes back to that book "Women are From Mars, Men Have a Penis" - or something like that.
erynthered Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 Wasn't Elizabeth Edwards in that "Shallow Hal" movie? 71600 Thanks for the visual
Chalkie Gerzowski Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Thanks for the visual 71802 Looks like the mother, not the daughter. Big XXXXL cheap pastel suit. They eat at Wendy's alright......she eats hubbie's ambulance chasing profits.

I guess it all goes back to that book "Women are From Mars, Men Have a Penis" - or something like that. 71754 Actually, there are plenty of eating disorders that involve eating less to the point of illness. I have no idea why this particular woman is overweight. She could be a diabetic, she could have had a hysterectomy, who knows? How that is similar to the VP breaking with his own President on an important issue because his own daughter is gay and the opposition commenting on it, I'll never know. The fact that their own daughter is gay and that they support a gay baiting President, I think, is important. It's not like Kerry "outed" her, everyone knows and the VP himself acknowledged it. Slate has an interesting article on this issue: Bush and Gay Baiting If at some point Kerry supports a constitutional amendment banning the obese from getting married, then I think it would be fair game to go after Edwards for being Kerry's running mate.
blzrul Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Nice to hear you can parrot the socialist talking heads on Air America. 70724 I'm not parroting anything - I heard Cheney make the comment. HE brought it into the political arena, not Kerry. And it was also discussed during the VP debates.

I think that has something to do with it. 71722 I put on a few pounds myself after my son died. I would imagine that if you scratch the men on this board who are overweight, underweight, balding or just plain plug-ugly there would only be 2-3 left. Nevertheless it doesn't keep most of them from standing in judgement on someone based on appearances.

They can't make a compelling case for their cause so they attack someone for being fat, or short, or tall...and on it goes. That you don't see anything wrong with judging and condemning people based on their appearance surprises me not at all.
