Yeah, cuz building a Bass Pro is a bad thing right? I just can't fathom how one CAN'T be built. Especially when they want to come there. Or wanted. Or wanted. Getting it done right is more important than getting it done quickly. It was Bass Pro, not the City of Buffalo, that reneged on the Aud/Donovan Building site, preferring instead to place a big-box store smack in the center of the new Erie Canal Harbor historic site that is the jewel of the future Buffalo renaissance - preservationists cried foul, rightly so. Larry Quinn and Mindy Rich tried to run roughshod over the wishes of everyone, ignoring years of hard-fought legal victories by preservationists and an extremely well planned revitalization of the original Erie Canal terminus/Central Wharf/Commercial Slip, to instead serve the interest of their pal, Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris. As they did previously when the Empire State Development Agency wanted to bury/destroy the historic Erie Canal site, the preservationists went to court and prevailed. We owe them our gratitude, because not only will the historic nature of the Erie Canal site be preserved, restored, and developed for future generations to enjoy and to promote tourism, but Bass Pro will also get their waterfront site - a true example of a win-win scenario. The Aud will be demolished this fall to create a shovel-ready site (the old blue seats, dasher boards, and other artifacts have been removed for future auctioning and asbestos abatement is now underway), and the final project plans call for additional canal sections to be excavated and re-watered, creating the 'waterfront' site that Bass Pro desires. All of this should be completed by around 2011 - roughly a year or so after the Seneca's new $200M+ 'Buffalo Creek' casino/hotel project opens a few blocks away - creating enough critical mass to serve as a catalyst for additional development downtown. It's been a long time coming - too long - and folks have every right to remain skeptical, but it's gonna happen. You're gonna love how The BuffTown looks in five years! All it does is bring low-paying service jobs to a town that already has a lot of those. Until Buffalo gets a major employer with high-paying jobs (high tech, pharmaceuticals, etc)... nothing is going to change. Every city needs a destination, and buffalo only has one 20 minutes away. Baltimore has the inner harbor, Boston has fanuel hall etc. You at least need one place where people can take people and say "wow, this is a nice area" - even if for only a few hours to go shopping and sit on a bench looking at the lake. throw in a convention center in that area and then you are really talking... Yes, it will - not by itself, but as part of a larger rebirth that's already occurring. Every downtown needs a retail core - Buffalo has not had one since the mid-80's, when all the major department store abandoned downtown and moved out to the Galleria. People who live downtown need places to shop, and don't want to drive to Cheektowaga. (Not sure when you last visited downtown Buffalo, but there's a housing boom of sorts near the Erie Basin Marina - a plethora of new $500K+ homes and condos - and in downtown Buffalo.) Bass Pro is the beginning of a new retail core - an anchor tenant that will entice other major retailers back to the city's downtown core. As those $500K+ townhomes and condos go up, other retailers will recognize the opportunity that exists to serve those clients. All it does is bring low-paying service jobs to a town that already has a lot of those. Until Buffalo gets a major employer with high-paying jobs (high tech, pharmaceuticals, etc)... nothing is going to change. Sounds like maybe you haven't kept quite up to date on what else is happening in the Queen City - pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and hi-tech are exactly the type of growth industries Buffalo is targeting. It will take a while - we're not Silicon Valley and they'll be no single large employer that will come in and 'rescue' us, but the City and State have been working to create the business environment, the incubators, and the economic incentives to attract companies that create just the type of high-paying jobs you mention, and with some surprising early success stories. Dozens of small companies have sprung up in what is now known as the Buffalo Niagara Medical and Biotechnology Corridor... I would have to do some research to get the following info perfectly right, but if I remember... A lot of big stores like Bass Pro use pressure and different loopholes to get public money and grants (read taxpayer money) to build their stores. Gander Mountain it turns out is one of very few that only use private capitol. So yeah them spending taxpayer money to build a crap hole in downtown would hurt if you ask me.
