Everyone’s a fan at heart. That includes NFL team presidents. And their rooting interest doesn’t stop with their own team. Mark Murphy, the new president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, grew up in Clarence, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo. In his youth, his family owned season tickets to the Bills. I have known Mark, a former standout safety for the Washington Redskins, since my days of covering the league for the Buffalo News. When he saw me this morning, one of the first things he said was, “So, as a Bills fan, how worried should I be about the games in Toronto?” Murphy’s reference was to the Bills’ agreement to play five regular-season and three preseason games in Toronto over the next five years. Many Bills fans are worried that it could be a sign of the franchise eventually moving across the border. Murphy, apparently, is one of them, although, in his new capacity, he grasps the business benefit to the Bills and, ultimately, the NFL.
