Dan
I'm thinking about setting up my own website. I need to register a new domain and have it hosted. I know GoDaddy does that, but are there any other sites/outfits out there that people have used that they think might be better?
Pete
I have a question too regarding legal aspects. I hate my former employer so much I turned down the severance offer with a 2 page letter. I was thinking of registering the domain name of the company and uploading my rejection letter. Is this legal?

I was thinking of registering the domain name of the company and uploading my rejection letter. Is this legal? I would think it would be legal. If they don't have the domain, I always thought it was fair game. And certainly anyone can put just about anything on the net. The only concern I'd have would be the ole slander/liable issue. So just don't say anything that'll get you in trouble.

Actually, that's not entirely true. If he worked for the company Widget Inc, and registered a domain name, widget.com, his company COULD go after him and take the domain away for free. Now if he had his own company, widget.com, or could show that he didn't make it to have any connection with the company, he might be ok. But making widget.com to put up a letter about the company -- the company could take the domain. Would they? Well, if they haven't evne purchased the domain for $8/year, they probably don't care for whatever reason. But they COULD.

So, I can register a domain, just for the heck of it, and some company could take it because they have a legit business with that same name. What if you have the domain and then someone starts a business with the same name? Very interesting indeed.

What if you have the domain and then someone starts a business with the same name? Very interesting indeed. From what I've read, that's usually different. In this case, I think it'd be a slam dunk though since he worked for the company, posted a letter to the company on it, so the company could easily take control. Dan
Well, if you plan on having inflammatory anti-Islamic content on it, you might give a pass to Network Solutions: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix...censors_an.html Nope nothing inflammatory at all. Well, I wouldn't think so. A friend of mine wants to set up a simple internet site to sell shirts, hats, etc. I'm handy making a simple website, but I've never registered or hosted a site. So, I was wondering what to advise. The few places I've looked at all seem pretty similar in price and features (paypal account), but just wondering if there's something I'm missing. What if you have the domain and then someone starts a business with the same name? Very interesting indeed. My former boss (mid-90's) used to be the president of Fox Network. Fox had never registered Foxtv.com, so she asked me to (read: "made me") register it to myself. I owned it for a few years, but did nothing with it. Eventually i started getting the letters from Fox lawyers. As I had already left my job, I just let them take the site, as I didn't give a crap. I actually thought of putting up a site devoted to the discussion of the fox (the animal) on TV programs...or something like that. I could've made a few bucks. gmac17
I have 500 domains, want to buy one? GoDaddy is pretty good, though I use moniker.com for most of my names. DO NOT use network solutions, or even search for the name with them. Once you search a name, they "reserve it" for 3 days which means you have to buy it from them or nobody for the next 72 hours. stick with .com even if what you want is taken, .net / .us are a big step down credibility-wise. I hate my former employer so much I turned down the severance offer with a 2 page letter. I was thinking of registering the domain name of the company and uploading my rejection letter. Is this legal? probably not, since you would be registering it in bad faith though you might have an out because you weren't trying to profit from it. I wouldn't go near it with a ten foot pole. I bought a bunch of names back then, but unfortunately didn't buy up every generic .com name i could...

As gmac says, GoDaddy.com is a good site to register - I have all of my domains through them. Just be careful if you do register it.
