Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Just curious, did anyone here what had better ratings last night, the baseball game or the debate?
fatKID_II Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Debate beat Baseball by more than 2:1... DEBATE: 36 SHARE BASEBALL: 16 SHARE
stevestojan Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 I've always wondered how TV ratings work. I mean, they arent monitoring our televisions, how do they do it? Random surveys? They have people who take journals on their TV viewing? How do they get the results so fast? Anyone give me a synopsis of how it all works...

It's funny though, I've never known anyone or heard of anyone having one.

fatKID_II Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Nielson system... A representative sample of families across the counties have their TV viewing electronicaly monitored... This network is made up of several thousands of family representing a cross section of the US...
Johnny Coli Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 How do they get the results so fast? Anyone give me a synopsis of how it all works... 69855 Mysterious and ingenious ways, Steve. Ways you wouldn't even consider. Take self-flushing urinals, for instance. That radar thing that knows to flush the thing when you walk away, well it also tracks your DNA. That's how they know where we are at all times. Self-flushing urinals. That's how the man keeps us down.
BF_in_Indiana Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Thos ratings are stupid. Unlees they monitor a LARGE portion of the country it isn't going to ever be accurate.

Im sure they only ask 8 people. Come on man, sometimes the things you say.....
MattyT Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Nielsen has a FAQ page that describes everything pretty thoroughly. http://www.nielsenmedia.com/ For what it's worth, I've never met any members of a so-called "Nielsen family" tho they claim to number in the hundreds of thousands.

Unlees they monitor a LARGE portion of the country it isn't going to ever be accurate. 69868 If you ever study statistics you'll learn, that you don't need a very large sample size in order to be accurate.

Like A Mofo Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Thos ratings are stupid. Unlees they monitor a LARGE portion of the country it isn't going to ever be accurate. 69868 Im sure the Evil Empire is up to no good!!! Steinbrenner PAYS off Neilsen!!!! BLAME THE YANKEE PAYROLL!!!!
BF_in_Indiana Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 Im sure the Evil Empire is up to no good!!! Steinbrenner PAYS off Neilsen!!!! BLAME THE YANKEE PAYROLL!!!! 69884 LOL Nah...... I just think that the ratings are scewed by not having a larger group of people in on it. I mean, if they have 250,000 people doing it, most likey they are the ones in the major TV markets. Well, that doesn't tell me what the rest of America is watching. I mean, if you monitored Indiana durring college basketball season you would see that about 80 percent of televisions are tuned into the Hoosiers games. Just stuff like that that doesn't add up for me. Not that I give two craps one way or the other, I just think they are skewed.
KD in CA Posted October 14, 2004 Posted October 14, 2004 My friend's parents were a Nielsen household, so they do exist... 69880 if my brother doesn't get to watch 'People's Court' in about 30 seconds, he's gonna throw a fit on their porch.
