Phil Indablanc Posted March 13, 2008 Posted March 13, 2008 AP News March 13, 2008 12:52pm Buffalo NY A computer glitch on the preeminent Buffalo Bills website threw the entire Bills fan community into turmoil. Without access to "the collective" fans were left to their imagination regarding the moment to moment status of their team. The ensuing panic was quickly mitigated by the fast response of the websites administrator and a team of runners who hand delivered hard copy "Where is BJ?" messages to the websites members. Early speculation that the problem was caused by a user known as Jay Rosen were false. Rosen was the victim of the notorious "Manual Virus" email which instructs users to delete their own files but only files on his personal computer were affected. The most likely cause of the crash was due to a known Java script bug that is triggered when a certain text string is entered too many times into a website and mistaken as code. The offending text string was "=RJ" and apparently the 23GB cache buffer limit was exceeded resulting in a "REMOVE JUNK" procedure thus eliminating most of the boards content. Most services had been restored by noon today and local vendors report that alcohol sales had returned to their precrash levels.
