OnTheRocks
I think when drafting as early as #12 they could get the best available that happens to fill a need....but lets say that scenario doesn't fall into place? How would you draft this season?
Pyrite Gal
I think you reject arguments that force you to abandon one approach totally to adopt the other. The thing adults do is strike balances. It is an easy thing to be a fanatic and simply choose one doctrine or other. Choosing either extreme to the exclusion of the other usually results in the same thing which is failure. The difficult thing to do is to figure out which choice gives you the best balance and if the Bills pull this off as they did last year (the Bills maintained that Whitner would have been their choice as a better player than the highly regarded Huff and they would have taken him over Huff anyway. As it turned out Whitner did produce better stats than Huff and given the run triggered for safeties by Oaks Huff choice I think the Bills struck that balance well). OnTheRocks
Something to consider: If Peterson, Lynch, Willis, Okoye, Branch etc...etc...are all gone and LaRon Landry is available, would you select him?

port allegany
A slight variation would be my preference - the Best Player in a Position of Need. In other words, not just the best player because in today's NFL players move so much you have to get them on the field very soon or you may lose your investment with little return. That leads to a Position of Need but I wouldn't reach for one position. If the Bills, say, need a LB, CB, WR, G but not a DE, S, etc. I would pick the best LB, CB, WR, G available regardless of position as long as it is one of these positions. The NFL is about player-makers and the 1st round is your best chance to get a play-maker. Later in the draft I may try to get a specific position or take a chance on an incredible athlete. Matt in KC
I think Talent, Need and Alternatives are all factors in making a choice. Example: LB - Willis is available Need: 90% (considers who is already on our roster) Talent: 90% Alternatives: 75% (higher = less alternatives if this player is not selected) Overall Decision score: .90 x .90 x .75 = .608 RB - Lynch is available Need: 97% Talent: 85% Alternatives: 65% (includes FAs) Overall Decision score: .97 x .85 x .65 = .536 WR - Ginn Need: 40% Talent: 87% Alternatives: 50% (includes FAs) Overall Decision score: .40 x .87 x .60 = .174 DT - Branch Need: 30% Talent: 93% Alternatives: 75% (includes FAs) Overall Decision score: .30 x .93 x .60 = .167 In the scenario where these players are available, I think we select Willis, not because LB is our biggest need, or because he's the most talented player available, but because he's the best fit of need, talent and our alternatives.
