BUFFALOTONE Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Around The League • The report by Pat Yasinkas of The Charlotte Observer noting that the Carolina Panthers would unload three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins for the right price was a little surprising, but not overly so. Because of his reluctance to participate in the offseason training program, the six-year veteran has been a challenge for the Carolina staff. His weight is a perennial problem and Jenkins, 27, missed nearly all of 2004 and 2005 with shoulder and knee injuries. That he was named to the Pro Bowl squad in 2006 was more than a mild surprise, because the Panthers' staff didn't feel he played that well. Carolina made a big investment last spring to sign unrestricted free-agent Maake Kemoeatu, and he's essentially the same type of player as Jenkins, a closed-area run-stuffer. We added walker for the much needed pass rush in the middle. If we can add Jenkins for a decent price I woud pull the trigger, the guy is relatively young and is a house to move in the middle. I am not sure why he fell out of favor in carolina but a change of scenery could be good for this guy. What do you all think? BT
Pete Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 When healthy Kris Jenkins is one of the best DTs in the business. Dare I say- on the cheap!
K-Gun10 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 if we add another dt which one do we get rid of normally the bills have 4 on the roster, im assuming K. Williams, Triiplett, Mccargo and Walker make the team and Jefferson goes back to PS and Anderson leaves us.

If Jenkins came on the cheap he would definetly be worth some consideration. This would sure up our line for sometime. What a great rotation that would be, Mcargo, jenkins, Triplett, Williams, and Walker. These lines would be an instant impact.

I doubt Marv wants a guy who has been a "a challenge for the coaching staff" who's "weight is a perennial problem". To be fair, I'm only going off of this description and don't know anything about the situation. But, if this is representative, it suggests the possibility of the kind of character issue that might bother Marv.

Since we only keep 4- who gets cut out of McCargo, Triplett, Williams and Walker. consider Jefferson and Anderson already gone. We already have DEs like Denney and hargrove who can move inside on passing downs.
Bills Fan888 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I would love to get Jenkins and even if he was injured we still have Triplett, Williams, Walker, and Mcargo.

We already have DEs like Denney and hargrove who can move inside on passing downs. I am sure we could find someone to cut on the roster. The fact of the matter is we cannot stop the run. Jenkins would instantly improve this line. If I had to axe someone it would be Triplett, the guy was not impressive at all last year. Cut your losses. We have a better 3 tech in Walker anyway.
Bflojohn Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 If you acquire Kris Jenkins, why doesn't the idea of trade possibilities come into play for a youngster such as Kyle Williams or John McCargo? Ideally, they could ship out Larry Tripplett and keep the young guns in the stable!
WVUFootball29 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 There is absolutely no reason to pick up Kris Jenkins. We have 5 DTs on the roster already. The guy is constantly hurt, a pain in the butt for coaches, and his pro bowl appearence was a fluke according to John Fox who thinks Jenkins played awful that season. He reminds me of Mike Williams, but on the other side of the ball.

Ed_Formerly_of_Roch Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 People don't seem to be able to count around here. As you asked, who are we going to cut? Someone did respond; "I'm sure we can find someone on the roster to cut" Good idea, let's cut Craig Nall. He never even played a down, so why bother with a backup QB. That's a luxury we can't afford. There was a trade suggestion. Can we get a first round pick for McCargo? If so great!. If not, then we are giving up on 1st rounder after one season in which he was hurt and hardly played. To bring Jenkins in, one of the five names mentioned must be cut. The only way I'd even consider it would be if you bring him in real cheap with no signing bonus, and he plays much better in training camp than Triplett. I'd maybe consider cutting him instead. But even then you're then eating Triplett's signing bonus whatever it was, so is he that much better? You can't keep swtiching horses every year. Then you go no where. That's part of the problem we're having with dumping TD and MM, you now somewhat start over, though not as bad as when TD first came in. But to give up on someone after one year, (or even two) just totally wastes whatever resources were used to aquire him. Yes on occasion, if you are certain a mistake was made, then end it quickly i.e. Tuton Reyes. But otherwise you have to give time for development. Since we only keep 4- who gets cut out of McCargo, Triplett, Williams and Walker. consider Jefferson and Anderson already gone. We already have DEs like Denney and hargrove who can move inside on passing downs.
KOKBILLS Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 name 2 better DTs in the NFL then Jenkins when Jenkins is healthy.................. Very true Pete...But the problem is Jenkins has rarely been healty over the past 3 Years and the word down here is He can't control His weight any longer... Folks in Charlotte LOVE Jenkins and most were absolutely shocked that He made the Pro Bowl Last Year because his Play dropped off significantly...Before the injuries He was just about unblockable at times...But the word around here is that He's not the same Player He was before the Knee Injury, and that He has frustrated Fox by failing to control His weight... I still like Jenkins a lot...I'm just not sure He'll ever be what He was...Especially if He can't cut down on the Bojangles visits...
MartyBall4Buffalo Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 name 2 better DTs in the NFL then Jenkins when Jenkins is healthy.................. 1. Tommie Harris 2. Richard Seymour (when playing inside at dt) 3. Casey Hampton 4. Pat Williams 5. Shaun Rogers 6. Kevin Williams 7. Kelly Gregg. 8. Marcus Stroud 9. John Henderson I like Jenkins, he's a top 10 but I'd take these 9 people before him.
JStranger76 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 When healthy I maybe take Harris and Seymour before him, maybe. I'd try and pry him for one of our 3rds and cut Tripplett's sorry ass, or keep 5 DT's with obviously Anderson and Jefferson the odd men out. I know our staff won't owe up to the Tripplett mistake, but that's what I would do.
nemhoff Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Give Big John a shot, we hardly know him yet. If Whitner, Simpson, Williams, Ellison are excelllent picks maybe MCcargo (sp) will be a good DT when healthy and with a little experience. I have a hard time believing that we traded up for trash to be thrown out the first chance some vet comes across the wire.

Pete Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 if healthy and at right weight I'd have him 3rd or 4th in that group 3rd at the very least IMO. Noone is better then Jenkins when healthy, noone!
jri111 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Since we only keep 4- who gets cut out of McCargo, Triplett, Williams and Walker. consider Jefferson and Anderson already gone. There is no rule that says you have to keep only 4 DT's. Actually I beleive two years ago we kept 5. The number of players on a roster is 53, that doesn't change. What is flexible however, is how you get to 53. There are generally guidlines to the number of players you keep at each position (i.e. QB -3, O-line - 9, DT -4), but they are just that, guidelines. Last year we kept 6 receivers, but you can keep as low as 5 or has high as 7 (as we did a few years back). It's a give and take at each position. So saying that we would have to get rid of a DT if we brought in another one makes aboslutely no sense. some teams have a few roster spots solely for long snappers and return specialist. We don't have a return specialist. If you want an example of how its done maybe we keep 5 DT's instead of 4 and 5 receivers instead of 6. That's just an example and the substraction is more likely to come from Defense instead of offense but the point is that It's flexible.

And I think, until McCargo proves that he can make it through a full season, the Bills are better off keeping 5 DTs... though it would probably mean that Tiny Tim isn't going anywhere.
