In retrospect, the beginning of the end

...came the week after the 2005 season opener vs. Houston. Hollywood Donahoe had allowed Pat Williams to sign w/ Minnesota in the offseason, but despite that loss the Bills jacked up the Texans' offense and Spikes was heard proclaiming that the Bills' D could become the "best defense ever." We even got an inside look at the Bills' defense on a special NFL Network 1/2 hour show.

Few recognized at the time that the Houston game was an illusion -- the Texans' offense was one of the worst to ever grace an NFL gridiron -- and Buffalo was subsequently embarrassed by the vaunted ground game of the Buccaneers the following week, while Meathead Mularkey played musical quarterbacks and caved in to the will of the veterans who mistakenly believed the team was playoff caliber.

I have no idea how the Bills' defense will perform in 2007, but it was indeed time to reload the chamber and start fresh. Good luck to Nate, London, and Takeo in your new homes.

I completely agree. This defense was way overrated even the year before the 2005 season when they finished #2 in total yards. They padded their stats playing the horribly weak NFC West teams.

The day Pat Williams left the building it was completely exposed and showed the vulnerability of the linebackers. Age and Injuries to Milloy, Vincent and TKO did not help.

The loss of Pat Williams was the single biggest player mistake of the Donahoe era.

Oh, just FYI, Pat Williams still lives in Buffalo in the offseason, still has businesses in the area, is a high character player, and...oh yeah....is a free agent after this season.

If we're all pointing toward 08, and devloping an offensive and defensive identity in 07, then Pat Williams could be the player that takes us over the top.
