Where do opinions stop and rants begin? You're initial post was flavored with "Take THAT Bushyites!". Nothing in so far as pros-cons-right-wrongs...

That's how these things get started. It's in the presentation. As far a a sense of humor, we all have one one way or another-but these are serious subjects requiring serious thought. Many people take it that way. When there is honest discussion about what the global war on terror is about and who is best in position to address it, nah-nee nah-nee boo boo doesn't help explain anything, whether it comes from you, me RiO, Tenny or whoever.

Where do opinions stop and rants begin? Everyone is entitled to an opinion, obviously. The rants begin when someone loses their self-control. In my initial post, I am guity of sarcasm. In my second post I was responding to personal attacks. I was raised to respect others. I also respect their opinions (when they are logical), be it you or tenny or whomever. I rarely, rarely resort to personal attacks, and if I do, well, I probably had a couple drinks that night (and no, I'm not an alcohlic, I just like to have a couple drinks once in awhile). Personal attacks need not be a part of any forum. Humor and sarcasm are the norm. Telling someone they are stupid or an idiot because they don't agree with you is not necessary, and in my opinion, childish.

As an aside, both of my parents and my sister are republican. I'm a democrat. We all disagree on many issues. I don't think they are stupid or that they are idiots. Quite to the contrary. I love my family very much, I just don't agree with them. None of the three of them will vote for Kerry. But they aren't voting for Bush either. I think it's a case of republican (but not Bush) or nobody. Simply because he/she is a registered republican and cannot/will not vote democrat.

Believe it or not, I wasn't referring to you.  I read here somewhere (correct me if I'm wrong) that you recently got married (congratulations!), so you must be happy and at least somewhat well-adjusted since you convinced her to marry you! Just kidding!!  You haven't attacked me personally thus far, so no, I wasn't referring to you. Sorry

Actually Tom, I will say that I do respect your opinions, I don't doubt that you know what you're talking about, and I don't profess to know more than you do about certain things.  But then, I don't get involved in threads that I know little about either, nor do I get involved in threads that don't interest me.  What I can't stand is those people who come into a thread just to launch a personal attack.

It just sucks when an interesting thread is invariably reduced to a pissing contest because people refuse respect one another's opinions.  It's childish.

You don't know my wife, though...she may be just as nuts as I am.

And I don't doubt there's areas where your knowledge is greater than mine (though I have a hell of a lot of knowledge in a hell of a lot of different areas). That's the thing about this board: there's a lot of really specialized knowledge in a lot of areas just floating around. Everyday there's a chance to learn something new here. What ruins it is the few people who can't accept that (and yes, Debbie, I'm talking about you), and the other few people who's input is limited to stevestojan "Muslims are evil" or "Flightsuit! Halliburton!"

The only thing that really gets me (and, again in all honesty, from you too) is blind partisanship. Like in the "Know it all" thread below, when buftex took my completely non-partisan observation on the basic requirement of prosecuting a conflict ("Know what you want to accomplish"), and turned it into partisan politics. In terms of national security, especially, partisan politics is almost completely irrelevent to the issue; the people that actually do the work are the career government service "drones", not the political hacks.

I'm actually grateful that Melody is keeping him off the streets. She's smarter than him. The world is a safer place for it.

But just wait 'til I unleash the felines of mass destruction! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I invite you to read the "know it all" thread, unless you only read threads you post in. Some of the points of view you might be looking for might be there.

Also, anyone watching would have seen the game playing by Germany coming long ago. Wait until France chimes in.

Okay, I read it. I'm not quite sure which points of view you were referring to though.

Well, I know you didn't ask for my opinion but since I just read three pages here it is anyway. As for defining victory, I would have to say that there are different "levels" of victory, which more often than not is a result of compromise between warring factions. As for winning the war on terror, I don't believe that will ever happen. It's never going to stop. The only thing we can do is try our absolute best to deter terrorism. Keep it down to a minimum. Tightening up our borders for starters. I'll probably get flamed for this, but how about not letting every (insert foreign names if you wish) Tom, Dick and Harry from (insert foreign country) eastahungaland come in and become a US citizen when they don't speak english and think that americans are evil. Call me prejudiced if you want, but I only live about 10-12 miles from where the Lackawanna 6 were sleeping at night. Those kinds of people don't belong here in the USA. Don't let them in in the first place, send them back home.

Whatever countries, be it France or whomever, "chimes" in, why would the US or Kerry turn them away? The US needs as many "friends" as she can get. We don't need the current alienation from other countries to continue. Even Tony Blair is distancing himself from Bush. Honestly Bib, who do you think will improve our world relations starting on Nov. 3rd? Bush or Kerry? Don't you think world relations are important?

No, for the simple reason everyone lies on the surface at least. The only reason folks like Germany are making an above the radar overture is either that a "deal" has already been struck, or the perception is there that a "deal" can be made. When it's politically expedient for a world leader, who is worried about his own voting base, to support America, he will.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on the borders. That's a hard one. We have a lot of border, and things get very political there. Talk to "white" and "black" Californians on the issue. The DoD can support efforts there, within the Posse Comitatus act still under Title 10 authority, but there is a serious lobby against it.

Welcome to America.

My point was, Tracey-that the German "announcement" is just so much political trash. I've tried to give a very brief overview, a bad synopsis, of the overall situation as it stands. I'm very close to this. I have also stated in the past that Mickey Mouse could be president, for all I care. Mine is not political rhetoric. I deal with it. Daily. Kerry is not the way to go on this particular issue. You want to vote for him based on economy, health care or stem cells? Please do so. Please don't vote for him based on defense. He's the wrong answer.
