Are Illegal Immigrants Good Or Bad For Economy?

Recommended Posts

Actually, Consolidated was the first airplane company to leave (for Los Angeles), just at the start of WWII. Curtiss didn't leave, so much as !@#$ up SO many projects (e.g. the SB2C Helldiver or SO3C Seamew) during the war that post-war the War Department/Department of Defense refused to buy from them, which basically shut them down. Bell hung around...but most of the aerospace industry moved to Southern California for the simple fact that the weather was more suitable for test flights there.

Most people don't know that Buffalo was an aircraft manufacturing center in the '30s and '40s (Curtiss and Bell combined manufactured maybe 35k fighters in Buffalo, which makes the city maybe one of the top 10 aircraft maunufacturing centers in the world during WWII).

Good points.

Seattle has sh*tty weather too?

The federal gov't, IMO is still the major factor (and blame) for creating the industrial labor climate during the war and exists well into today.

I think one of the reasons the Boeing Aircraft Company was located in the Pacific Northwest was the easy availibity of spruce lumber, a key part of early airframes. The continued presence of the Boeing Co. during the WW2 buildup led to construction of the Columbia and Grand Coulee Dams on the Columbia River, which is the largest source of hydroelectric power in the US.

Not sure if this was posted or brought up in the 23 pages of this thread, but there was an MSNBC article this morning on undocumented workers and taxes.

Illegal immigrants Undocumented workers filing taxes more than ever

The IRS issued 1.5 million ITINs in 2006 — a 30 percent increase from the previous year. All told, the tax liability of ITIN filers between 1996 and 2003 was $50 billion. The agency has no way to track how many were immigrants, but it’s widely believed most people using ITINS are in the United States illegally.

One number hints at the number of illegal immigrants having income taxes deducted from their paychecks.

In 2004, the IRS got 7.9 million W-2s with names that didn’t match a Social Security Number.

...

Many banks now allow illegal immigrants to open an account with their ITIN, and Bank of America has a pilot program in Los Angeles that allows customers to use the numbers to sign up for a credit card. Others have created mortgage products for ITIN-bearing immigrants, including Citibank, which offers one in partnership with ACORN Housing Corp.

“They want to go forward, work, be a normal taxpayer,” said Erica Gonzalez, a staffer in ACORN’s Fresno office, where demand for the tax ID has shot up in recent years. “If they want to establish themselves here, this lets them do that.”

They're working. They're paying taxes. They're contributing to the economy.

If they are paying taxes, i do believe that at least makes their stay over here somewhat legit, after all they aren't draining the economy in this respect

Tax avoidance is the biggest crock for an argument. Even if you believed the wives tales that illegals don't file income tax, there's no explanation of how they avoid sales, excise & property taxes (unless in some states there's an exception to taxes if your last name ends in -ez) But even if you were to look at the income tax angle, the actual tax paid by filers with under $20K in income (likely filing category for illegals) is small.

Because the ones that stand on the street corner are paid in cash. I hired a handyman a couple of weeks ago. An American (well his name was Ivan Smirnoff but definately American). Paid him with a check made out to his business, not him. I have to assume he's paying taxes plus his self employment tax.
