clumping platelets Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I'm not sure of the cause, but the last several weeks we have seen a large spike in traffic. We are seeing year over year activity increasing between 100% and 200%!!! Aye Carumba! We have been pushing more GB's per day the past two weeks than we did on Draft Day last year - annually our biggest day of the year. I feel like we got slashdotted or something... With that said, we upgraded several software packages to their latest versions and tweaked some others in hopes to wring some additional performance out of this puppy. I have RFQ's out for new hardware in hopes to eliminate bottlenecks. Hopefully, the Sabres can fulfill their expectations and I would like to be able to meet demand. I'm trying to price out a dual-core Opteron with a 15k RPM SCSI disk and 500GB/mnth of bandwidth. I'll keep you informed of any upcoming changes. Just an FYI.... In English please
The Dean Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 In English please Yes, PLEASE. What exactly does "Aye Carumba" mean? That is NOT English. That is Simpsonese

That sort of thing tends to increase the visits by the unlettered and the unwashed. SDS Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 SDS is considering getting bigger boxes with more blinking lights to help speed things up. I have requested double the amount of lights and a 50% increase in colors. That should suit us nicely.

SDS Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 If you need any $s to offset the charges, I will gladly send in my small bit. A couple people have asked my about this. I have set up an easy way for people to make contributions. Just go to your control panel and click the "Make a Donation!" link on the left hand side. That gives a couple of options to choose from. Thank you for your support! If there is not a preset amount that floats your boat - just PM me for our direct paypal account/mailing address.
Bill from NYC Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 If you need any $s to offset the charges, I will gladly send in my small bit. I second that. If a collection is necessary, let's do it (as long as I can simply donate and not do the work).
SDS Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 I don't know if we can remain with our current host due to their pricing. I have found a couple of reliable, highly recommended hosts who have much better pricing. However, this obviously requires us to change hosts, yet again, and we would have to deal with all the accompanying headaches w/ regards to domain name transfer, downtime to set the server up, etc... Is everyone set to deal with these headaches, should we move forward w/ this?

The only horror show was the Rivals days, when the pop-ups were out of control.

As for the headaches associated with changing hosts, the biggest trouble will be what you will go through. I will grin and bear it if told well in advance. Just make sure it is not anywhere in the vicinity of draft day.

Just make sure it is not anywhere in the vicinity of draft day. the timing may not be ideal, because I am out of town the next couple of weekends (when I would be able to do the bulk of the work). That puts us at the beginning of April - just in time for Hockey playoffs. I might have to do a half and half and float two servers for a month or two.
Fan in San Diego Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Yeah, but it's still OFF season! That's still a lot of traffic to be increasing that much. SDS you sure there's no hidden porn server on the machine?!? (I once had pirates hack into one of my wireless linux based robots and start to use it as one!) I had some guys from Germany hack a NT based server and used it as an MP3 file swapping server. The hosting company called me and said my usage had spiked thru the roof. We tracked it down wiped the server and started over. But that was an NT server that I hardly ever used. But SDS certainly worth checking out . Analyse where the most traffic is coming from. Maybe you have been hacked or the hosting company is serving someone else off your server and you are taking the hit for it.

He had a call about a server at a small company being almost out of hard drive space. Goes and looks at it. Since it was a small company, there should be no reason they would even be close to out of space, based on how big the drives are and they hadn't had it more than one year. Turns out whoever installed it, set it up so they could log into it remotely and was using it as an FTP server for pirated movies.

The Dean Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 in a contest of 1 maybe.... Don't be modest, Fearless Leader. You may not know squat about football or music, but you run the best board in the biz. ...I'm old and fat so I'd better start running now, right?
