I begining to think that an NFL team in Las Vegas is more likely than a team in L.A.

 

Reasons why:

 

1. L.A. can't get a stadium done. And we all know that a stadium is the most important thing to the NFL.

 

2. The NBA, NHL, and MLB are all holding discussions about putting teams in Las Vegas. Plus they also have a NASCAR race (March 11). The Pittsburgh Penquins are now talking about moving to Las Vagas. The Florida Marlins have talked and the Sacramento Kings are talking. Too much noise for it not to happen.

 

3. The white population has shrunk in L.A. Because the cost of living is so high in L.A. Many white people moved to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Seattle, Boise, Idaho. And white people have higher incomes.

 

4. Clark County Nevada is the fastest growing county in the US and it's likely to keep growing. Many people are moving to the sun belt and it's not just old people.

 

An NFL team that I think would move to Vegas would be the San Diego Chargers. The Spanos family lives there and I think if they don't get their stadium they could take the plunge.

Do you realize that if a team is to move, it's probably the Buffalo Bills.. They are less likely to move a team out of a larger market that sells out consistently and makes the playoffs, and more likely to move a team out of a smaller market team that had 4 home games blacked out last season due to lack of attendance at the games..

Yes market size is important and small market teams are more likely to move. I think if Buffalo is to move, it's more likely to Vegas rather than L.A.

 

But S.D. has not supported their team with sellouts either and they can't get a stadium either. The city of S.D had to pick up unsold tickets as part of the lease with the Chargers. The Chargers dropped that idea to entice the city to build a new stadium.

 

The Spanos family also said they'd pay for the entire cost of the stadium if the city would give them the land for free. The land that Qualcomm already sits on. They want the development rights and the city said no. The city of S.D. is so bankrupt they can't pay city employees their pensions.

I've heard this a lot. But the hold on sports betting is only 2% to 5%. Yes sports betting has kind of put Vegas on the map and it does attract high rollers but they don't make anything on it. So what's the point.

I used to live in Phoenix and it's full of people from LA (mostly white) who moved there to get away from the high cost of living in Cali. Most people that live in Phoenix came from Cali.

 

Other facts to consider: 66% of children born in Phoenix (Maricopa County) are Hispanic. That means in 20 years, college-age kids in Phoenix are going to be about 80% Hispanic if you factor in illegal immigration.

 

In other words, white people are going to be the minority in a very important consumer group. Not that it matters, but mexicans don't have the disposable income that white people do. It's just a fact. Why does it bother you so much?

 

As far as sports teams are concerned, I think the changing demograhics are going to change the business models.

People have come to Phoenix from everywhere, and it's not even close that the majority of them come from LA. Many do but an overall percentage is marginal if not miniscule. They come from all 50 states. There is a huge population from Canada as well as Central and South America and even the Mid East. An enormous influx from the cold weather Northeast. A huge amount from Nebraska and Texas. And Phoenix is still a great place to live, and apparently a little better since you moved away from it with that backwoods mentality.

I read on azcentral.com (Arizona Rebublic) that 2/3 of the births in Maricopa County (2005) are Hispanic. 2/3 is 66 percent. Given that white people are having less children, then Phoenix will be majority hispanic in 20 years (college age people).

 

As far as the majority of transplants not being from California, that's news to me.

Oh the strip made billions of dollars off of it, but they said it was gangland the entire time.

 

About 1200 arrests, 20 shootings, and lots of rooms were left in shambles. Alot of customers were afraid to leave the casinos.

 

When stuff like this happens I just do'nt see Vegas with a major sports franchise.

I could care less what this guy said about a pro sports team moving to Vegas. If anything happens it's years down the road, not nearly as inevitable as rlfluties claims. Doesn't really matter, to me I'll still root for the Bills and Sabres, and it helps that UNLV hoops is having a really good year this season. That aside, most of what you said here is complete poppy rooster.

 

You may have been exaggerating, but billions is not the correct figure to be throwing around. The total non-gaming economic impact was a little less than $100M I believe. Gaming is more difficult to measure - you can't exactly ask everyone at every slot machine and every table "why are you here?" and then keep a long list. To be honest we kind of do that already through loyalty marketing, but not on a minute scale like singling out everyone in the casino for the whole weekend.

 

1200 arrests - funny, in the local paper and on the local news I heard 350. In fact I heard the sheriff say that about half were locals, half were visitors who were arrested. And on average it was "more peaceful" than New Year's Eve. 20 shootings - try more like 4. And one involved Mr. Lawbreaker from the NFL, the Pac Man. And I'll give you an "insider tip" - rooms are left in shambles in every hotel, in every city, in the country. Might have been more frequent that weekend but that does not necessarily mean anything.

 

The big deal with the All-Star weekend here was the "element" that the NBA carries along with it is not necessarily stellar. We heard the horror stories here before the weekend from past host cities like Atlanta and Houston, and after the weekend, I think the city did a collective, "yep, happened here too, oh well."
