But the issue is that no matter what happened this year he was gone anyway with no compensation:

 

1 - if he had a bad year again, we were going to let him walk rather than giving him the big contract he was looking for

2 - if he had a GREAT contract year, he would have asked for so much money (like Nate) we would not have been able to keep him anyway

 

Sure we could franchise him, but that just creates a Lance Briggs-type situation where everyone is unhappy.

 

So regardless of all of the other reasons why (offseason workouts, being an idiot, not being into the team), the best move is to get compensation for him now.
