Rico Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Unless some miracles start to happen, I think 2.25 years is long enough to effectively judge the 2002 draft. Considering where we were drafting (#4 overall), the talent pool available (very solid) and all that was riding on this draft (TD's future), it's been an unmitigated disaster, the worst draft in Bills history IMO. 2002 1 1 4 4 Mike Williams T Texas 2 2 4 36 Josh Reed WR Louisiana State 3 2 29 61 Ryan Denney DE Brigham Young 4 3 32 97 Coy Wire DB Stanford 5 5 4 139 Justin Bannan DT Colorado 6 6 4 176 Kevin Thomas DB UNLV 7 7 4 215 Mike Pucillo G Auburn 8 7 39 250 Rodney Wright WR Fresno State 9 7 41 252 Jarrett Ferguson RB Virginia Tech 10 7 49 260 Dominique Stevenson LB Tennessee
BuffOrange Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Yeh, other than the last 3 scrubs, all of those players have helped us lose games Don't forget we gave up a pick to trade up & take Denney. Would anybody object if I put this symbol after every sentence? Sorry, it's hard not to when discussing this team

Thailog80 Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Rico....were you watching Howard Simon today? Heheheehe That was my e-mail he read about that draft.
GG Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 The 2002 draft would be half as painful if you didn't look at the players that were passed up.

Mikedag Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 We also traded our 2003 1st for drew on draft day 2002 Think of what this team would be if those 2 days played out differently Didn't Harrington go one pick ahead of us that year?

jahnyc Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 The 2002 draft was supposedly loaded with talent and we drafted at a high position. I recall that the 2000 draft was not particularly strong and we drafted much lower.
R. Rich Posted October 11, 2004 Posted October 11, 2004 Man, have things sunk low here. We're debating the worst drafts now? Thanks a lot, Donahoe and company!
The Jokeman Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 The 2002 draft was supposedly loaded with talent and we drafted at a high position. I recall that the 2000 draft was not particularly strong and we drafted much lower. 65894[/snapback] They say it takes 3-4 years for a drafts impact to be felt which is true. As the problem being with our 2000 draft being so poor it impacted what we did in 2002. Case in point if in 2000 we drafted DE Darren Howard instead of Erik Flowers we would likley have never drafted Ryan Denney. If we took WR Charles Lee (most common fans will be asking Charles who?) -click here for info . in Round 7 instead of Drew Haddad we might have never taken Josh Reed. I mean the look at just two of the Jets picks from that 2000 draft: John Abraham and Chad Pennington, who were likely the two primary reasons why the Bills lost Sunday. Everyone wants to put the blame on Donahoe for this team being so poor but I think Butler still deserves some of the blame because of that truly horrid 2000 draft. I mean imagine if Darren Howard on this defense, instead of Denney, maybe we could of taken an O-lineman like Andre Gurode (starting RG for Dallas) instead of Denney when we traded up.
Ray Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 Too early to say on the draft. MW was rated the best OL in the country by half the "analysts" and the other half said Mckinnie was--either way everyone said they were both stud OL. Reed was awarded the best WR in college football. Not bad picks for a draft. MW has actually played well this year for the most part. He is a better run blocker than Mckinnie which was supposedly why we took him. Reed looked great as a rookie but mentally has regressed. Let's just see what happens the rest of the season. Any way you slice MW is our best OL period.
TigerJ Posted October 12, 2004 Posted October 12, 2004 It was a pretty bad draft, although Mike Williams is actually starting to play well. Not just pretty good or average, but well. Historically there have been some pretty horrible drafts. Remember Phil Dokes or Tom Cousineau? I think Phil Dokes was a first overall pick and a complete bust, making Mike Williams look like an all pro.

Rico Posted October 12, 2004 Author Posted October 12, 2004 Pete, just looking at the 1st 100 players, there are a whole lot of what-ifs on the 1st day with the 4 scrubs we picked, but I am always stunned at all the great players drafted in the 1st round after our $36M bust.
