Smith might be let go by Chargers

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the San Diego Chargers might part ways with G.M. A.J. Smith after the April 2007 draft.

This reports meshes with our prediction that Smith will be let go for his role in the dysfunction that resulted in the termination of coach Marty Schottenheimer.

...

I don't buy into this report. Makes no sense to have AJ hire a new coach and run the draft and then bring in another GM who will want his own guy as a coach.

Then why wouldn't they have canned Smith instead of Shotty in the first friggin' place? And if the plan is to get rid of Smith in the very near future, then why let him a ) interview the HC candidates and b ) run the draft?

Then again, this would be asking one of the Spanoses to make a coherent decision. That in itself is pretty far-fetched...

You're absolutely right Lori. For all the schite Ralph Wilson gets here, the Spanos debacle is light years ahead in terms of dysfunctionality. If AJ is about to be canned but is being kept so they can reap the benefits of his group's draft research, perhaps the Spanos family should examine John Butler's final draft for the Bills under arguably similar circumstances in 2000 (aka the Y2K Disaster).

The Spanos family is an older money version of Dan Snyder. They're kind of a cross between Joe Robbie, Dan Snyder and an orangutang. "Left turn Clyde."
