plenzmd1 Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Okay, says in this here article that the Dolphins are interviewing guys for the OC role, but that Cam Cameron will call his own plays. In all seriousness, does not an OC call the plays. Am I missing something here? And crimminy, friggen meathead not even in the running for an OC job where he doeasn't call the plays, man that mans job prospects have sunk fast! http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-spd...la-sports-front
LynchMob23 Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 When the OC doesn't call the plays, they are responsible for creating the gameplan in concert with the ideas the coach wants to use with regard to that specific game. So they'll set up the plays for 1st and 10 etc, and then the coach during the game would decide which of the plays would actually happen. Hope that helped!

And it's clear that Mularkey won't be back as Fins Offensive Coordinator. Tight Ends Coach. A big fall for Mr. Gadget Play in the span of 13 months. HC to OC to TE Coach.
Pyrite Gal Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 There is also plenty of work to do taking responsibility for coaching individual players on techniques, reviewing game tape not only for prep of the O plan but to figure out which techniques will best beat the tendencies of opposing players. The Bills actually Dick LeBeau design our zone blitz scheme, but Jerry Gray kept the DC title and he called the specific plays in games. Dissatisfaction with not having play call duties talked about as a prime reason LeBeau left. Various duties which are sometimes called quality assurance which is reviewing your own game tape looking for the flaws that other teams might try to exploit are also parts of some teams and are duties which may fall to an OC not calling plays.
stevewin Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 What about being responsible for the whole offensive philosophy as well as the playbook?
LynchMob23 Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Depends on the HC - if he's offensive minded, you'll have to work within the philosophy/playbook he wants to use. If it's a defensive minded coach, usually the OC has free reign, provided he stays within the boundaries the HC sets (i.e. I want 60/40 Run/Pass, stuff like that) and typically the 4th down calls are the HC's call.
apuszczalowski Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I think they get demoted to TE's coach if the are no longer calling plays, or working on their resumes since its usually the step before being fired (thats if they started calling the plays at the start of the season, then have it taken away)
