Congrats to Buffalo's little gem of a hotel, which is co-owned and run by a friend of mine from high school.

Buffalo, NY (AHN) - Picky travelers keen on comfort have rated a former flop house as one of the five best hotels in America for 2007. The 28-room Mansion on Delaware Avenue earned the Zagat guide's highest ranking for service and tied for the second-highest ranking for room quality in a hotel with under 100 rooms.

The Mansion was the only urban hotel in the U.S. to earn high rankings from travelers responding to Zagat's survey.

Zagat surveyed 15,000 frequent travelers to rate more than 1,000 hotels in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Also named in the first category were two Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii, Twin Farms in Woodstock, Vt., and the Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Va.

In the second category, competitors were in well-known tourist destinations such as Taos, Hilton Head, S.C. and Aspen, Colo.

The 138-year-old Mansion is one of Buffalo's most prominent hotels and among its smallest.

It was built as a mansion and eventually became a flophouse for the homeless until a businessman bought it and opened it as a hotel in 2001.

Rooms are priced between $169 to $325 and offer 24-hour butler service, free afternoon cocktails, chauffeured transportation, free overnight shoeshines and a private dining room. Rooms feature whirlpool tubs, and fireplaces.
