stuckincincy
What's his field? If it's in Education, I'll have additional comments. As well as Public Policy, Sports, Communications, and the like. Or if it came from a mail-order joint like the University of Phoenix, et al. Beerball
What's his field? You're thinking baseball, hockey doesn't have fielders. I must admit that I'm unaware of this PhD gift giving thingie. Is it common practice?
smokinandjokin
Spencer's Gifts always has some good stuff. Perhaps if this person will be employed in a position that requires they give presentations, the X-rated Laser Pointer would be a good buy. It's a typical laser pointer that comes equipped with caps that will project some interesting messages...

The Avenger
You're in luck - my brother is a biochemist and this bizarro site might have something truly unique - something only a true molecular biologist or biochemist would appreciate.... Giant Microbes Nothing says congrats like I giant stuffed ebola virus..... (actually, if its the USDA I'd recommend Mad Cow and/or E.Coli)

TheMadCap
it is either in molecular biology or biochemistry - I don't remember. He will be working for the USDA. A general Chemistry or Biology Lab manual would be fairly appropriate, seeing how 95% of the PhDs I've met outside academia couldn't prep mobile phase of 100% dH2O...
