What's his field?

If it's in Education, I'll have additional comments. As well as Public Policy, Sports, Communications, and the like.

Or if it came from a mail-order joint like the University of Phoenix, et al.

You're thinking baseball, hockey doesn't have fielders.

I must admit that I'm unaware of this PhD gift giving thingie. Is it common practice?

Spencer's Gifts always has some good stuff. Perhaps if this person will be employed in a position that requires they give presentations, the X-rated Laser Pointer would be a good buy. It's a typical laser pointer that comes equipped with caps that will project some interesting messages...

barring something tasteful and funny - I'll need to go to the other extreme and get him the raunchiest, most disgusting porn mag I can find.

it is either in molecular biology or biochemistry - I don't remember. He will be working for the USDA.

Buy him some antiseptic hand wipes, a bottle of A-200 brand head lice curative, and a $4 nasal saline spray bottle?

You're in luck - my brother is a biochemist and this bizarro site might have something truly unique - something only a true molecular biologist or biochemist would appreciate....

Giant Microbes

Nothing says congrats like I giant stuffed ebola virus..... (actually, if its the USDA I'd recommend Mad Cow and/or E.Coli)

I'm a molecular biologist (not a PhD though) and have received gifts in the past from Infectious Awareables. I have the Avian flu necktie and the gonorrhea boxers.

A general Chemistry or Biology Lab manual would be fairly appropriate, seeing how 95% of the PhDs I've met outside academia couldn't prep mobile phase of 100% dH2O...

that actually sounds like a useful gift or at least too subtle of a joke for non biologists.

Free? - I'm there! I've been itchin' for a good sit down discussion of alveolar macrophages - you so seldom get the opportunity to hang out and shoot the breeze on this over a few beers. What a pefect way to come down from Valentine's Day.
