stuckincincy Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 who does he play for? Played for The Acropolis Debauchers. Rich players, slavish fans. Same as today.
Sketch Soland Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I always had a problem with Descartes line "I think therefore I am" Doesn't make sense. Shouldn't it be..."I think therefore I think I am?" yes, and shouldn't it be "I think... therefore i think, "I think I am"..... it's an ad nauseum infinitely looping semantic cluster!@#$ of I-ness that was only brought to divine completion when Tedy Bruschi took the football field in the late 20th and the WORD became ONE with the Godhead once more...
BuffaloBilliever Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Descartes coined it in the founding charter of the "Tautological Society of Reflexive Self-Awareness" Beat me to it. And it's only used when the sportscaster/person can't think of something to say or misreads his notes or the cue cards.
tennesseeboy Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 yes, and shouldn't it be "I think... therefore i think, "I think I am"..... it's an ad nauseum infinitely looping semantic cluster!@#$ of I-ness that was only brought to divine completion when Tedy Bruschi took the football field in the late 20th and the WORD became ONE with the Godhead once more... But...isnt' that putting Descartes before the horse?
Beerball Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I always had a problem with Descartes line "I think therefore I am" Doesn't make sense. Shouldn't it be..."I think therefore I think I am?" My favorite is "I am a man therefore I think of breastesses."
keepthefaith Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 If I am a guy at a Cher concert, why does everybody assume I'm gay? I would only accuse you of having bad taste in music.
Beerball Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 But...isnt' that putting Descartes before the horse? that's a very funny line Steal it from Carson?
Captain Hindsight Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 When i saw this thread it became official ...the offseason has begun
Sketch Soland Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 When i saw this thread it became official ...the offseason has begun well said, sir.
Sketch Soland Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 But...isnt' that putting Descartes before the horse? i'll cop to having been a philo major so this joke never gets old for me
IDBillzFan Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I always had a problem with Descartes line "I think therefore I am" Doesn't make sense. Shouldn't it be..."I think therefore I think I am?" Actually, it makes perfect sense in that because he was able to think, he was able to confirm his existence. It was along the lines of Satre who believed "To do is to be." And somewhat counter to Socrates' belief that "To be is to do." It all, of course, centered around Sinatra, who said "Do be do be do." I'll stick with Sinatra.
macaroni Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 I always had a problem with Descartes line "I think therefore I am" Doesn't make sense. Shouldn't it be..."I think therefore I think I am?" The actual quote was ................ and I quote ................. "I stink because I ate a yam" ..................... but he was misquoted by the press
tennesseeboy Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 The actual quote was ................ and I quote ................. "I stink because I ate a yam" ..................... but he was misquoted by the press Or as the philosopher Popeye once said..."I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam!"
dib Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 and why does EVERYONE in sports use it now.... because they also use terms like "trickeration" and "athleticism" The latter to describe ability.
crazyDingo Posted February 1, 2007 Posted February 1, 2007 "It is what it is" is the opposite of the Athlete's other favorite quote, "Uh, this isnt how it looks (Honey)(Officer)(Coach)"
Adam Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Didn't Macho Man Randy Savage use that one back in the 1980's after he beat Tito Santana for the Intercontinental championship? Man, Savage held that belt for a long time......then he cheap shotted Steamboat
DC Tom Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 I think it is what it is, therefore I am... I think I am what I am, therefore we just have to execute better...
BuffOrange Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 its almost as overused as the "we dont get any respect" card. Woah - lets not get crazy here. Urlacher said that the bears have been underdogs all season long, and only favored when they are home and even then, onyl favored by 2.5 points. News check brian: the bears were favored in 16 of 18 games they played this season. The ONLY homegame where they were favored by as little as 2.5 was the saints game last week. Ha, yeah it's pretty lame. Sad thing is it actually works on the players; or else coaches wouldn't preach it all the time.
