My offseason plan

The Jokeman

Recommended Posts

Most everyone has an offseason plan in mind, so I thought I'd toss mine in. Yet because it's fairly long I'm doing it in several posts in one thread in hopes to make it easy to read. I'm going to start with our free agents then move onto guys would let go and then guys I'd target in free agency and in the draft and end up with an overall depth chart. Feel free to post your thoughts either individually or on the whole.

CB Nate clements: Ralph ponies up the money to the keep a key cog in the defense for years to come.

LG Kris Dielman: Not as good as Steinbach but arguably the 2nd best LG available in free agency.

DT Ian Scott Chicago Bears: The lure of being a full time starter and knowledge of the defense and being an upgrade to Tim Anderson makes him an ideal guy to sign.

LB Wali Rainer Houston Texans: has a history with Jauron in Detroit. Brought in for veteran leadership and offers better size and a better cap number then London Fletcher and can replace Josh Stamer on special teams.

OL Floyd Womack Seattle Seahawks: Started 9 games at LG for the Seahawks this season but's also seen time in the past at OT. A perfect swing O-lineman for depth at OG/OT to replace Mike Gandy.

DE Chris Cooper Arizona Cardinals: I expect Kelsay to go onto greener pastures so Bills bring in another DE who can be part of the rotation and can also play DT in a pinch but won't break the bank.

CB Kiwaukee Thomas: Starts the season at nickel back but hopefully Youboty develops enough for him to finish the season at dime back.

WR Andre'Davis: he was a key special teams contributor last year and brought back to serve the same role in 2007.

RB Anthony Thomas: Backup to Willis McGahee again.

A look at the draft:

Round 1: MLB Patrick Willis Mississippi: Rainer was brought in for depth purposes only.

Round 2: OG Josh Beekman Boston College: I prefer O-lineman that are a little more athletic but should be able to start from day 1.

Round 3: WR Robert Meachem Tennessee: Has the size to be a compliment to Lee Evans, asking him to start as a rookie is asking a lot but he offers more upside then Peerless so might end up being a spot starter with Josh Reed.

Round 4: TE Martrez Milner Georgia: Developmental with upside to serve behind Robert Royal for a season or two.

Round 5: Lost in trade for Anthony Hargrove.

Round 6: FB Le'Ron McClain Alabama: Likely backup in 2006 but could start by years end.

Round 7: RB Jon Cornish Kansas: put big numbers up his senior year but also knows how to play special teams yet nothing more then a replacement for Shaud Williams.

I would be fine with that team, it would be a good product, my only concern is that we still don't trully have a weapon at TE, I really believe that a TE is the key to reaching the post season. Also, while I would love to see it, I don't think that Robert meachem will be availible in the third round. I think we could get a Dallas Baker there, he has very good ball skills, long arms, and is an ideal possesion WR. I think you could flip flop 2 and 3, Beekman will be there in the 3rd, if he's not Grubbs will be, both are better than our current starter, I think that Grubs has not hit his stride yet, I think he could turn inot a dominating RG.

While I am at it, wasn't chris cooper involved in the Balco case? and Womack would start at RT or RG and not be a back up.

Meachem reminds me a little bit of Maurice Stovall last year, in that neither did much until their senior seasons and think rigt now grade higher then they'll be drafted. Baker's another good option.

Grubbs played LG at Auburn and to me I don't like the idea of switching sides for O-lineman and that's why went with Beekman as in looking at the free agent landscape Dielman was a definate upgrade to Gandy. As felt he be better then Cosey Coleman (to play RG), who I almost went with if we were to draft Grubbs.

Womack very well could start and is the perfect security blanket if Pennington should falter or if Beekman does.

Yeah Cooper was involved with Balco but he played the season for the Cards which tells me he's cleaned up his act, In reality we don't have to get him but felt he offers the best in terms of versaitility but other DEs that could be had include Jarrett Johnson and Kenyon Coleman to name a few.

you have jarrett jersey set up but you dont have him picked in the first round....guessing you think he is def a top 10 pick

I like Jarrett and think he might be available where we pick but with the earling mumblings of the offseason it sounds like London Fletcher's return is lower then I thought it would be when I made my Jarrett profile. So that's why went with Willis in Round 1 and looked to shore up a WR later in the draft.

No way Marv drafts Milner...Not a high character guy, in the mold that Marv says he wants on the Bills.

I like this signing a lot. McCargo is an unknown, and Kyle Williams is not a short yardage DT. We lost an ungodly number of 3rd and shorts.
