Phillip Rivers continued holdout

Someone is getting bad advice, someone else is giving bad advice, and it's a shame. I watched Vilma interviewed for the Jets, and he says it over and over; I needed to be here for the team. It was important to show up on day one.

If I cared, I'd almost feel badly for San Diego. First Leaf, then Brees (though I'm not sure what's not to like about Brees) and now this.

Don't forget what was made public a few weeks ago...SD ginning up a contract with things like "if we win 3 superbowls and you lead the league in passing" and so on.

And I recall several posters opining that maybe Eli wasn't being greedy, but was being smart not to want to deal with the Chargers.

Bonus incentives.....6 Superbowls and 6 MVP's in 6 seasons. I too would balk at those incentives. Sounds like the Mannings made the right move.

You're right about his season being shot. He may sign - which I doubt - but he'd be nothing but a clipboard jockey. Unless SD is stupid and play him...and they seem to qualify. :w00t:

Don't forget about the $50 million part of that contract that wasn't tied to pie-in-the-sky incentives......

shouldn't come as any surprise that Rivers has yet to arrive at training camp. The Chargers' last five first-round picks failed to sign before the start of camp, and their last three top-five picks were out beyond the exhibition opener.

In their contract offer to Rivers, the Chargers included an incentive package that was ludicrous at best. He would get a $5 million bonus if he appeared in four Pro Bowls and won four Super Bowls in his first six seasons. He would get another $7.5 million if he appeared in five Pro Bowls and won five Super Bowls during that time. And he would get an additional $10 million if he appeared in six Pro Bowls and won six Super Bowls in his first six seasons.

as stated above the contract offer is insincere

who says it is bad advice?aparently eli manning was going to do the sme!hell he told them up front he would never play a down for them!i do feel a player should play where he is drafted though.too bad there isnt a hard rookie cap.like a first round pick cant make more than 2 million dollars a year untill his next contract and a 2nd round pick cant make more than a million and a 3rd 750,000 and the 4th 500,00,you get the point.it seems like then there wouldn't be any holdouts because that would be what all rooks would be making! go bills in'04

Rivers Holdout

Does anyone else think that his rookie season is probably in the crapper? After missing all of camp so far I have to think his season is essentially over.

Chargers are the new Bungles!

They can't do anything right!

Seriously, who would want to play for them?

That loser, Wiley, left town as soon as he could!

The first thing I heard was the Chargers' offer was based on ridiculous incentives, so I felt bad for Rivers...... but then I heard another report that the offer contained a $16,000,000 signing bonus, so I now feel badly for the Chargers. If Rivers is going to pass on $16M up front, he has only himself to blame.

I understand the maximum value of the contract was 40 million, of which 20 million were those so called impossible incentives. If that's true, and the contract was for 6 years, the real value of the contract is about 3.3 million per year average, no matter how big the signing bonus is. That's not that high for a top draft choice.

Not true. $40.5 million is the "base" value of the Chargers' offer - signing/roster bonuses, base salaries, etc. The Super Bowl incentive is on top of that, plus $9 million in other, more realistic incentives and escalator clauses.

What they are offering him is a $5 million in bonus with the rest of incentives flat out silly with no real hope of attaining, the rest a standard contract which team can end any time they wish . The offer is rediculous compared to all similar players of Rivers stature. The 60 million figure is all fluff

Greedy ass....

I refuse to fault a rookie for holding out for a contract. This is the only time for 5 years these guys get to control what happens to them (to some respect). They have 3 months (between the draft & camp roughly) to negotiate and sign a contract that will provide for them and their family for the next 5 years and possibly their entire career.

The average NFL player only lasts 3 years in the league. If you were in a profession where you knew you may only have 3 years to earn enough money to provide for your family, wouldn't you make sure you were getting the absolute best deal (i.e the best guaranteed money you could get...signing bonuses etc) possible?

Are professional atheletes over-paid? Yes. But the industry is what it is. You can't fault a guy for trying to look out for him and his family.

This, to me, is different from when a vet holds out for a better contract. The difference is that these vets already HAVE a contract they signed and they should live up to their end of the bargain.

Just my opinion though.
