Or did injuries take their toll for Gore?

I didn't pay close enough attention, but the most informative Canes fan I know was all over Gore as the next big thing.....and how he didn't have the support in front of him besides the injuries. He always asks me how Willis looks and if he has found 4th gear yet. I picked Gore in every fantasy league last year because of that, but only had him in one this year.

Willis was gonna be moved to FB to accomidate Frank Gore- part of the reason he left early. Frank Gore is a freak! The Miami coaches said he was the best RB they have ever seen. The dude has blown out both knees and is kicking ass in the NFL. No comparison!

It is difficult to tell who would have started in the end, but Gore's injuries made it an easy decision. Prior to the season, Frank Gore was the presumptive starter.

Gore has had an outstanding season. He also is supposed to be a great kid. He came out of college early to pay for his mother's medical needs. She has a bad kidney and is on a transplant list (as I recall). It is nice to see him do well.

Gore was starting ahead of McGahee at the U before his injuries. Of course I think the injury McGahee had was more severe then the two Gore had.

Gore was awesome before he blew out both knees. He was the best back I'd seen in college football since Marshall Faulk, and he was going to be "Reggie Bush" before Reggie Bush. He actually made you hate Clinton Portis because you wanted Gore to be playing, but Gore was just a freshman. McGahee was relegated to fullback, nothing more than an afterthought on that team. Gore is a great player now, but he doesn't have the open field ability he had prior to the blowouts.

The Canes have been blessed with some pretty good backs in recent years: Edge, Portis, Gore, McGahee.

Edge's cousin (Baby James) started much of the season this year. He has shown some flashes. I have no idea whether he will be as good as the backs mentioned above.

4 runs over 50 this year alone.......i think he can still move in the open field

Willis set a school rushing record, scored 28 td's and was first team all american. I recall one of the reasons he pro was to rehab his knee while getting paid.

He's great, but trust me, he was quicker and faster. He used to just glide. He has a lot more power in his game now, and the strength he built up kept him on the field at Miami and got him drafted when he had no burst or explosiveness after the injuries. I was holding out hope that the Bills would draft him late just because you have to love the heart he showed and just the slight chance he could recover any of that explosiveness was worthwhile of a 6th round pick. But, he did well in workouts and got drafted a little earlier.

That was a great team Willis was on. Probably the most talented they've ever had, with the possible exception of the year before. Willis was very good, but as we all know by now, he is not real quick to the hole or elusive. Once he gets 3-4 unimpeded strides upfield he is "rolling" as Zach Thomas once described. At the U that year he was getting those opportunities all the time. Talented, but not the unforgettable runner that a guy like OJ, Barry Sanders or Marshall Faulk were. Gore was.

I will agree that Miami was loaded when he was there. Willis scored touchdowns without even being touched (unfortunately, many against SU). I remember him being lighter back then. I thought he was great at Miami but an unnecessary rick by TD to draft him.
