Tux of Borg Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 The Top 10 Saddest Songs in the World The Verve's hit 'The Drugs Don't Work' has been named the saddest song in a new scientific study. An expert in physiology and music analysed physical reactions to a number of rock and pop songs and deemed the 1997 track to be the saddest ahead of 'Angels' by Robbie Williams. The study, sponsored by Nokia UK, measured heart rate, respiratory response and skin temperature to find the saddest songs. "A slow tempo song like The Verve's 'The Drugs Don't Work' slows down the heart compared to most of the other songs and compared to white noise - in other words, it works like the emotional state of sadness. 'LDN' by Lily Allen was declared the happiest song in the study, followed by Abba's 'Dancing Queen' and REM's 'Shiny Happy People'. The Top 10 Saddest Songs: 1. The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work 2. Robbie Williams - Angels 3. Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word 4. Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You 5. Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U 6. Will Young - Leave Right Now 7. Elvis Presley - Are You Lonesome Tonight? 8. Christina Aguilera - Beautiful 9. James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover 10. Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees

ieatcrayonz Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I am surprised that R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" isn't on that list. 872858 There should be at least 4 about Sammy.
Dibs Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I am surprised that R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" isn't on that list. 872858 Good call. I'd vote for Hank Williams "LONG GONE LONESOME BLUES" Magnificently depressing.
GoodBye Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I vote for "Alyssa Lies" by Jason Michael Carroll My little girl met a new friend, just the other day, on the playground at school between the tires and the swings But she came home with tear-filled eyes, and she said to me "Daddy, Alyssa lies" Well I just brushed it off at first, 'cause I didn't know how much my little girl had been hurt or the things she had seen. I wasn't ready when I said "You can tell me" and she said... "Alyssa lies to the classroom, Alyssa lies everyday at school, Alyssa lies to the teachers as she tries to cover every bruise" My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep. As I stepped out the room, I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet "God bless my mom and my Dad and my new friend, Alyssa *oh*I know she needs you bad Because Alyssa lies to the classroom, Alyssa lies everyday at school, Alyssa lies to the teachers as she tries to cover every bruise" (bridge) I had the worst night of sleep in years as I tried to think of a way to calm her fears I knew just what it was I had to do *I knew exactly what I had to do* but when we got to school on Monday I heard the news My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad the lump in my throat grew bigger with every question that she asked. Until I felt the tears run down my face and I told her that Alyssa wouldn't be at school today 'Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom she doesn't lie anymore at school Alyssa lies with Jesus because there's nothin' anyone would do Tears filled my eyes when my little girl asked me why Alyssa lies *Oh Daddy, oh* Daddy tell me why Alyssa lies
BF in Indiana Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I don't know if this counts, but i want to cry everytime I hear Puff Daddy's remix of "I'll be missing you".
Cheeseburger in Paradise Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Nazareth - Love hurts 872877 "Love Hurts" was written and originally recorded by Roy Orbison in the early 60's. The Big "O" was a master at the "slow / sad" song.

What a great song writer: Emma was the lawman and I was the brave We got in trouble, we'd never behave And we'd run around all morning and rest in the shade I remember where I stood telling Emma we were best friends for good We started school the inseparable pair And I'd chase the boys who were pulling her hair And she climbed up the tower accepting my dare At the early age of eight I told Emma if she fell I'd be there In time I would carry her books, that's when it began I started to notice her looks and the sweat in my hand Then there was a totally new game to play We both gave our promise to never betray And I was so sure we'd be married one day At the early age of ten I loved Emma and I would 'til the end One day she climbed up the tower, she kept looking down The split-second lasted for hours 'til she lay on the ground And right then I grew up in every way I buried the child in me that day But I guess not completely or I wouldn't say that part of me believes that sweet Emma will come back someday Yeah a part of me believes that sweet Emma will come back someday
Phlegm Alley Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Brand New - Play Crack The Sky---Saddest Song. Ever. We sent out the S.O.S. call It was a quarter past four in the morning when the storm broke our second anchor line Four months at sea, four months of calm seas only to be pounded in the shallows off the tip of Montauk Point They call them rogues, they travel fast and alone One hundred foot faces of God's good ocean gone wrong What they call love is a risk, cause you will always get hit out of nowhere by some wave and end up on your own The hole in the hull defied the crew's attempts to bail us out And flooded the engines and radio and half-buried bow Your tongue is a rudder It steers the whole ship Sends your words past your lips or keeps them safe behind your teeth But the wrong words will strand you Come off course while you sleep Sweep your boat out to sea or dashed to bits on the reef The vessel groans, the ocean pressures its frame Off the port I see the lighthouse through the sleet and rain And I wish for one more day to give my love and repay debts But the morning finds our bodies washed up thirty miles west They say that the captain stays fast with the ship through still and storm But this ain't the Dakota, and the water's cold We won't have to fight for long This is the end This story's old but it goes on and on until we disappear Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while we are underneath I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains sunk below the sea I spoke the words but never gave a thought to what they all could mean I know that this is what you want A funeral keeps both of us apart You know that you are not alone Need you like water in my lungs This is the end
MattyT Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 What about "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and pretty much anything by Nine Inch Nails?
TheMadCap Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I hate listening to Don Mclean's Vincent...
IDBillzFan Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 While it doesn't end sadly, one of the great sadly sung songs is "A Better Place To Be" by Harry Chapin.
Bill from NYC Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 Surf's Up by the Beachboys. Brian was pretty much telling us that he was gone. "I Wasn't Made For These Times" was another sad song by Brian Wilson.
Buford T. Justice Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 I can't take any list seriously that doesn't have "Tim McGraw - Kill Myself" in the top 10. Anybody with a hint of depression could kill themselves after listening to it. I'm gonna clean the house I'm gonna fix the fence In my final hours I'm gonna tie up these loose ends I wont leave a note For anyone to find Tomorrow they'll know What I've done here tonight [Chorus] The drastic steps I've takin' Are just an act of desperation I knew no one would miss me So what the hell I fought and lied I drank too much Hurt every one I ever touched Just how much I hurt you is hard to tell This is not some kind of cry for help Just good bye I wish you well Because I love you I'm gonna kill myself Now who is that In my easy chair Now wait a minute That's the old me sittin' there And I thank God The devil in me died I stand before you now A man changed and alive [Chorus] The drastic steps I've takin' Are just an act of desperation I knew no one would miss me So what the hell I fought and lied I drank too much Hurt every one I ever touched Just how much I hurt you is hard to tell This is not some kind of cry for help Just good bye I wish you well Because I love you I have to kill myself Gonna clean the house Gonna fix that fence In my final hours I'm gonna tie up these loose ends
