As of last night the Nevermores' defense has passed Chicago's, and is allowing the fewest points in the league. They've got power personnel at every position. Linebacker Bart Scott, undrafted out of Southern Illinois in 2002, is having a terrific season. The Baltimore secondary is strong, including Samari Rolle, whom Tennessee considered washed up; the defensive ends are strong, including Trevor Pryce, whom Denver considered washed up. Rookie tackle Haloti Ngata has made Ray Lewis a hot commodity again, by tying up the middle and keeping blockers off No. 52. (Ngata is the defensive Rookie of the Year; the Bills and Raiders, which considered then passed on Ngata in the draft, might regret that decision for a long time to come.) They may have a point about the big DT keeping the lineman off of BAL LB's, but DROY?!?!?! Give me a f'ing break. The truth of the matter is the Bills had numerous holes to fill and yes DT was one of them, I think that a taking a DT at 8 who is only going to play on rushing downs is TOO HIGH. Who says Ngata even fit into the defensive scheme we were trying to run.
drnykterstein Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I dunno Lawyer played well this season for Atlanta.. we could have Kept Lawyer.. gotten Ngata and had a different looking defense this year. Can't complain too much though, this Bills team is doing better than most expected.

Is Donte getting valuable experience? Yes. Was SS a critical position to fill going into this season? No.

But using the #8 overall selection to nab a strong safety was not smart. As a previous poster pointed out, keeping Milloy (who was under contract and is playing great for the Falcon now) and drafting Ernie Simms or Ngata would have been much better for this defense. Instead, we cut Milloy, who is still a productive player and was under contract at a reasonable price. We keep Vincent (who was clearly washed out) We cut Vincent after the season starts and pay him his ENTIRE $2.5M salary for doing nothing this year. That money could have been used to pay Milloy who is still a good player. After all that, if the Bills were so dead set on drafting Whitner, why sign Bowen to a multiyear deal??? Whitner has done absolutely nothing that Milloy couldn't have done.

So I guess he's bound to suffer another major injury soon.

Dawgg Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Coverage is not his strength but it certainly doesn't mean he is "bad" at it. Rarely did he get burned on long plays when he was in coverage. This belief has been propagated because he is so good in run support, the assumption is made that he simply cannot cover. Baloney, IMO. Additionally, Milloy is a HUGE presence in the locker room in terms of veteran leadership -- an asset that has been critical to the Falcons in the second half of the season. At the time he was cut, he had about 3 solid years left in the tank and instead of using the draft to fill a more valuable (and more pressing) need, we wasted a top 10 pick to backfill a position when it wasn't needed in the first place. He was not good in coverage. Cover 2 safeties have to be good in coverage. 864997[/snapback]
