bills_fan Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 So as a side business, I am part of a group that buys, fixes up and resells NYC properties. After closing on an apartment in Brooklyn, I head over to meet the rest of the group and start laying our plans for renovation. I open the fridge and there's a bottle in it...1974 Dom Perignon. Now, I know that champagne is drinkable right away after bottling, and that this has *probably* lost some of its carbonation. But my question is if this is still drinkable? Or possibly worth anything? Thanks.
agilen Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 Thats kind of strange, as I don't believe there was a vintage of Dom in 1974. Can you take a pic of the bottle? If that is true, then yes, its still good (if it were stored correctly), and yes, its worth a decent amount of $$ (somehwere between $200 and $500 i'd guess).
billsfanone Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 Save it and bring it to McFaddens for after the Bills win a super bowl. You might have to wait at least another 32 years though...

I have no idea how it was stored all those years. Just that it was in the fridge in the apartment. Now, its in my fridge.
MattyT Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 That's two champagne questions in two days. No wonder the Bills games aren't selling out....people are buying tickets to the theatre, opera, and such. No love for Miller, "the champagne of beers?"

It would be interesting to see what he really has there.
olivier in france Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 1974 Dom Perignon stored in a fridge?!!! Well i would not store that kind of jewel in a fridge if i don't plan to drink it within the next two hours! If that bottle was in a good cellar for the last 32 years that should be an amazing wine but with such an old bottle there's a chance it has become an awful drink ...

I checked it out again and I have to say I was wrong on the year. It is 1976, Vintage. Sorry about the confusion. I will take a pic of the label and post it soon (if I can). Edit: I believe it looks like this (will double check when I get home).. http://www.winehouse.com.au/ShowWines.asp?pID=17315

And a good one it was, one of the best in the past 50 years. The best way to tell if it has been stored properly and is still good is to open it up and taste it. You'll need an educated palate for that. I'll be right over.

Chef Jim Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Nice. Lets enjoy! 865497 Before I head to Brooklyn, the 'fridge you found this beauty in. It was plugged in correct?
bills_fan Posted December 13, 2006 Author Posted December 13, 2006 Before I head to Brooklyn, the 'fridge you found this beauty in. It was plugged in correct? 865500 It was. It is now in my fridge. And yes, its plugged in. Since I have no cellar, is that the best place to store this?
Chef Jim Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 is that the best place to store this? 865517 NO
Chef Jim Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Care to elaborate? 865573 My stomach. Geez, what took you so long. Comedic timing is everything.

Pine Barrens Mafia Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 No love for Miller, "the champagne of beers?" 864690 Miller HIGH LIFE. Not that abortive Genuine Draft or Lite.

This was a very dry and hot summer and in fact it's probably the best wine year ever... You should check the value of this bottle, frankly i'm not sure i'd drink it, but probably'd sell it and buy a 12 bottles case of last year's production with the money i'd get! (there's probably some specialised internet sites...)

Hell, I may just hang onto it and crack it when the Bills win the SB.
