JDG
...but given that this team could not stop the run if its life depended on it, just how good can Fletcher, Crowell, and Spikes really be? I mean, the run defense on this team is just plain killing us.... it ultimately did us in on Sunday and against Indy, as the Chargers and Colts both just plain run the ball right down our open throats in crunch time, and rushing defense is a big reason why it took us all the way to the last play of the game to beat the Jags and Texans. About the only positive, I can say is that at least with our run defense being so bad, we aren't giving up tons of points - but the rushing defense problem is definitely much deeper than the defensive tackles or even the safeties.... CFLstyle
In all fairness against the Chargers Crowell was out for most of the game and Coy Wire was his replacement.
todd
I'm not sure I understand the hype behind the tampa 2 defense. Indy can't stop the run, either. Teenie weenie DTs don't do much much for me. If you don't have a DT that can require a double-team, you seem to be screwed. Tampa 2 requires damn good DTs. We don't have that. Spike surely isn't back to his normal self, but he's very good. So is Fletcher. I'm OK with our LBs, it's just our DTs that are lacking. ...but given that this team could not stop the run if its life depended on it, just how good can Fletcher, Crowell, and Spikes really be? Crowell? not a stud yet, but still improving. You can at least hope he can take it to another level next year. That brings me to London Fletcher. <sigh.... > I hate to say this, because I am convinced the guy has the heart of a lion, but I have always believed we'd never win a playoff game with fletcher as our mlb. He's just too SMALL to provide the run support we need up front. MAYBE if we had a tandem equivalent to ted washington and pat williams up front tying up 3-4 guys on every play, Fletcher could be somewhat of a force running wild and making the tackle on every play. But with the guys he has in front of him, he is just not adequate as a starting mlb. our run defense is embarrassing. it's so bad, i don't know how you can consider ANYONE'S job safe for next season. Fletcher is the kind of guy you love to root for, but i just don't see him as the kind player we need to stop the run.

JDG 857230[/snapback] Agreed, but I'm not convinced we even have much of anything that can be referred to as a run defense? In the first half it appeared that we didn't have a defensive line on the field. I am not sure they touched anybody.
