RED DEER, Alta. (CP) — A Red Deer man has been jailed after an outraged burglar spotted massive amounts of child pornography on his computer and called police.

William Mitchell, who pleaded guilty earlier this year in Red Deer provincial court, was charged in October 2005 after RCMP, acting on an anonymous tip, searched his home. An agreed statement says that someone had broken into Mitchell’s residence and taken a video camera. The camera, the tipster said, had images of child pornography and would be left on the steps of a church.

Police retrieved the camera and soon realized the burglar had videotaped a computer monitor displaying images of child pornography.

Following the address printed on the burglar’s note, police seized computer equipment containing 13,315 pornographic images.

Mitchell will remain in jail until he is sentenced on Dec. 1.

Cpl. Greg Brown of Red Deer City RCMP said outside the court that the burglary remains unsolved.

Now that's a crazy story.

I don't know how I feel about this... Seems like a slippery slope if anyone can get your house searched by anonymously pointing a video camera at a monitor then call the police and leave the tape at a church....

Do the ends justify the means? I'm not sure.

But...but...but...

I guess he pleaded this out, so perhaps it won't get the scrutiny it deserves.

Is it possible that you could be arrested and/or convicted if someone broke into your home, planted child porn on your computer, taped it on your monitor and turned it over to the police anonymously?

Crazy Canadians!

Hm, you're more cynical than I am! ;)

I'll have to bring that up when I teach my PC Security class as a reason to password protect your own computer.

I was just thinking that same thing. Nobody uses my PC except me, but now I might need to Password the thing.:D

I think the only problem with it is that it can be used as a way to get around having a warrant. Send a "Burglar" into the home to search the place and get evidence to put someone away. I'm not against it if it puts people like this away, but just worried it can be used too easily by corrupt people to get things done for themselves.

"Now class, today we are going to learn about password protecting files so when a burglar or computer repair shop looks at your system, they won't be able to get at your illegal child porn."

??????????????????????????????????

I know SOME of you knee-jerk right-wingers are anti-education, so maybe I shouldn't be too surprised by this response. I just re-read the thread and can find nothing that even REMOTELY defends the accused child pornographer.

They're right to think about the slippery slope. The next step is someone breaking into your house, putting some child porn on your PC, and doing the same thing.

It's not so much about protecting pedophiles. There's a delicate balance where freedom is concerned.

Or hell, why even bother trying to put it on the PC when I can just print a bunch of it off and leave it in your house? No fuss, no muss.

Or how about putting it in your garbage can on trash day (before it's picked up) and call in an anonymous tip?

Scary.
