Top FA's by position

2003

Recommended Posts

Here are my top FA's by positions of need that I can see signing with the Bills this Free Agency Period.

DE

1. Justin Smith- The guy is a stud and not highly touted. Think schobelesque in the pass rush but is pretty good against the run, also. I think Marv would have to offer him some big money for him to sign thought. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/235243

2. Cory Redding- He is very underrated. He is the best d-lineman on Detroit with Shaun Rogers out. (he also is HUGE 6-4 290) I think that he would be a fairly cheap commodity for the Bills. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/396068

3. DeWayne White- He is a solid, high character defensive end. I think he could be sign cheap, too. http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/396122

DT

1. Rod Coleman- He has the perfect size for this defensive scheme, he is a veteran, and he is a stud. http://sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/133255

2. Ron Edwards- Maybe he could pull a peerless price and come back to the team that drafted him. He is having a very good year, and I think he could be signed for a fairly cheap price. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/235053

RG

1. Derrick Dockery- A young guard that would make us forget about Chris Villarial instantly. I'd don't think that he would cost too much for Marv to sign him. http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/395949

2. Vince Manuwai- He has started 42 straight games for the Jags.

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/396029

WR

1. Drew Bennett- He is a big reciever (6-5) and would be a very good #2 reciever alongside Evans. I think he would be a bit more of an expensive option though.

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/245091

2. Mike Furrey- Hard worker (starting safety for Rams last year) and hard nosed player. He might be a little expensive too.

http://sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/192807

TE

1. Eric Johnson- He is an excellent reciever. It would be nice to see the Bills finally have a solid TE. He won't be too cheap though.

http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/289090

2. Daniel Graham- He'd be an upgrade over Royal.

I definitely like the idea of justin smith, drew bennett and Eric Johnson on this team.

OP, I don't really see Bennett/Furrey being that expensive. Justin Smith maybe.

Smith would be a great addition, but he might be too expensive.

Drerw Bennett does'nt excite me as much, and I would just assume that the Bills go after a WR in the draft.

I think Eric Johnson would be a tremendous upgrade, and a good possibility. With Vernon Davis on IR, I can not see the 49'ers paying big money to keep 2 TE's.

Yea, I think that Eric Johnson will definitely not be resigned by the ninaz.

Ok I spent the last 4 years in Bengals territory and saw most of their games in that time (while watching the Bills of couse). Justin Smith is hardly a "stud". He is like Schobel in that he shows flashes of something special, but it happens far less frequently. I'd say he's more in the "bust" category as I think he was an early to mid first rounder.

why would you say he is so bad? He's got very good staticstics.

He has above average statistics at best. Watching him week after week, he's one of those guys that you forget is on the field most of the time. As pointed out, he was a top 5 pick. When you take a DE that high you expect him to get a consistant pass rush and be a playmaker, not simply a 7 sack a year guy.

Looks can be deceiving. :P

Justin Smith is having a good, solid season.

A few numbers::

Smith, total tackles, solo, assists, sacks

56 33 24 6.5

Here are some others

Peppers 47, 39 8 11

Seymour 31, 17 14 4

Schoebel 32, 23 9 8.5

Denny 34, 24 10 7

Kelsay 42, 28 14 5.

With that good number of assists, he's getting to where the ball is. IMO, he does get good pass pressure, and plays a complete game.

Being picked high doesn't guarantee razzle-dazzle status, but it often gives a team a solid player.

Completely agree with billsfanmiami about Smith and I even went to the University of Missouri. We were SHOCKED in columbia when he was taken fourth overall (way to high IMHO). He's a good but not great player who would cost more and not be that big of an upgrade over Kelsey/Denney.

Well, I certainly wasn't recommending that Bflo open their wallet to court him. Just that he is a very decent DE, and one that minds the run.

I'd be a bit surprised if the B'gals re-sign him; he has some name recognition and that can translate into big bucks.

Is Travis Henry a UFA after this year?

846872

According to his NFLPA.org website Henry is under contract through 2009.

Would LOVE to see Eric Johnson with the Bills.

847089

Johnson definately giving the Bills a receiving threat at TE yet unsure Marv be so fast to sign another UFA after getting Royal last year.

Give me Trevor Pryce over Justin Smith/Rod Coleman/any other DLineman out there.

852833

Pryce has a connection to Jauron with their days in Chicago but to me he's a depth player as he's on the other side of 30 and rather we pursue younger guys like Ian Scott if looking for a DT to replace Tim Anderson and/or compete for a starting spot with McCargo.
