Congratulations, America.

I think, given your rather absolute stance on any number of issues raised in the past (others might be rude enough to say "opinionated"), that yes, you might be a bit close-minded about some things.

That is not to say that I too may not be as open-minded as I probably should be about specific concerns that I feel strongly about. The close-minded perspective might have been about your Canadian views as much as the Arab-Muslim connection. On the Canadian side, I feel that I can be more confident in my views because I am well-versed in the subject area.

To elaborate on my feelings toward Canada, I feel there are a good many Canadians who simply take an anti-American stance to show the rest of the world that they're NOT American. To me, that's not only ridiculous, it's insulting.

A good portion of the reason Canada's lived in such peace and prosperity has been the fact that she shares a thousands-mile border with a neighbor that's been more than willing to trade with and help protect her.

What you don't realize is that Canada actually does help it's southern neighbor. Like I said in my other post, there are Canuck soldiers dying every day from Afghan suicide bombers. What do you expect us to do with this pathetic military?

So why do you continue to support a party that panders to them...?

Perhaps you missed the fact that I voted "none of the above".

I *used* to be a republican, back in the days when they actually believed in cutting government and lowering taxes.

W is no conservative. I *did* vote for him last election because I saw him as the lesser of two evils. Kerry just flat-out scares me.

Burkas and car bombers common in Kuwait?  Seriously...(half-serious with the car bomber question).

Honestly, I'm never sure whether to defer to your opinion of Arabs because you have lived among them, or to question it as biased by the types of Arabs you lived among.  My biggest concern, though, would be that you don't seem to ask that question yourself; you seem to simply assume that the Arabs you were familiar with were representative of Arabs as a whole.

There were burkas, yes. No car-bombs that I saw. And yes, I have made that assumption based on my experiences and by co-mingling them with what I read about and see every day.

Maybe it's wrong of me to do it, but I do.

And i'm not ashamed of it either. All things being equal, I'd rather live in the USA than in say, Syria or Egypt or Saudi.

Alright, so if you are neither a Republican nor a Democrat, what argument are you trying to make with this thread? Isn't this a lateral move in your mind?

Or is it that you think the Republicans were the lesser of two evils in this election as well?

Yes.

The Republicans actually pay lip service to lowering taxes and reducing government. The Democrats don't even bother with the charade. Nancy Pelosi just scares me. I can see the machinery just turning in her head.

So you prefer a government that "pays lip service" to issues that are important to you and then instead focuses on issues that you either do not care about or are against (the religious topics, for example: stem cell research, gay marriage, and abortion)?

This MAY come as a shock to you:

I am PRO stem-cell research.

I could care less if gays want to marry, I just want them to be subject to the same limitations straight marraiges are.

Abortion I'm ambivalent on.

But first and foremost, the most important issue I believe the government should be concerned with is LIMITING ITSELF.

The Democrats have never been the party of limited government...at least not in my lifetime. That's one reason I'd never vote for a Democrat. Bush, for all his faults, at least cut my taxes.

What's worse, tax and spend, or no tax and spend? I think Pelosi is experiended enough to know that many of the House gains were from conservative-moderate Democrats, and a move to the center on issues is the best way to make progress and retain the gains that were made. On the other side, the Republican party may move more to the Right since they have lost a number of moderate Congressmen, and the more extreme members will have more of a say.

Problem is that the current incarnation of the Republican party has not been about limiting itself either. And thats too bad, both major parties want to expand the size of government, which I abhor. :D

How about no-tax, no-spend?

That'd be nice.

No, I'm not surprised, you pretty much repeated what I wrote in my post.

I'm just curious why you'd prefer a party that claims to support an issue you care about (limited government), ignores that issue, and then instead wastes enormous amount of time, money, and political capital on issues you are either against or ambivalent to.

Only for 2 years. 2008 will be a once-in-a-generation type election, if I'm reading the tea leaves correctly (think Reagan in 80, Kennedy in 60 etc.).

Potential, I suppose. Let me see if I can verbalize it:

It's like having the chance to take one of two women out. You know there's a chance you'll get lucky with one, and no shot of any hanky-panky with the other. Which one do you take out? You can only pick one, barring staying at home with the porn collection.

That's what we Americans have to look forward to.
