LAMP: Van Miller

Recommended Posts

I asked around here a little while back about Van Miller, whether anyone had seen him around in Buffalo or at The Ralph. The good news is, I have today recieved a letter from The Man Himself that I thought I would share with y'all...

Dear Nick,

Thank you for the terrific letter and congratulations on the great season you had with the 'Blitz'.  Wish the Bills could take a leaf out of your playbook.  Next year: the big "enchilada"... You'll win it all and I would love to be there to see it.  The pictures were terrific... especially #79.

The Bills have looked very bad in their last three straight losses, but I have a very good feeling about the Green Bay game this Sunday.  I think they will beat Brett Farve and the Packers.

Will look forward to seeing you in Western New York in December and early happy birthday greeting.  Make sure you contact me as soon as you are in town.

He goes on to talk about his health (you will be pleased to know he is doing OK, but I havce spared the details)... and then:

We are finally getting back some sense of normalcy after a storm that toar down 2000 trees and caused several millions of dollars of damage to the extent that the President declared Western New York a national disaster area.

Again, Happy Birthday... look forward to seeing you and keep those London Blitz riding high.

I will always be your friend,

Van and Gloria Miller

It's such a nice letter - and so pleasant to converse with someobody the old fashioned way, some how the written words carry so much more weight. I will definately drop in on Van Miller when I am in town. I still can;t get over the fact that I have a Hall of Famer as a pen pal!! He's 80-something and I am 26! Go figure...

Good to hear. I saw Van in the field house for New England sitting in on the 97 Rock pre game show. I have to say it was kinda' sad. He looked about 105 yrs old, his arm/hands shaking uncontrollably (medical condition?),..and he could not stay awake in his big easy chair during breaks. I really thought he must be very ill. Good to hear he's ok.

Yes...so sad that written communication has faded so in the face of e-mail. No more keepsakes, no more fond memories to hold in one's hands and recall the younger days, the words of our loved ones, no more profundities to be discovered at later date...

A loss... :w00t:

actually, letter writing has returned with a vengeance because of e-mail. no one i know wrote letters before e-mail; they just called people.

Hey Nick tell him hello form his fans in Dunkirk as well. Van is an old Dunkirk guy and went to school with one of my aunts. Anytime I ran into him over the years he would always ask on how the folks and friends in dunkirk were doing
