Evans not cutting it as #1 WR ...

Recommended Posts

The Moulds trade to Houston seems to have been good for no one:

- Houston's passing offense if even worse and Carr has been benched for the first time in his NFL career

- Evans production is way off and he only has 1 TD through 7 games

- Moulds is on a losing team and isn't making any more money than he was in Buffalo

The reason for all this? Moulds and Losman were not the best of friends. Moulds called out the coaches for going with a work-in-progress like Losman when the not-so-young vet wanted to play on a team with a chance to win now. Losman responded by de-emphasizing Moulds in the passing game and throwing mostly to Evans.

Seems like another big sacrifice for the Losman experiment which had better start paying off fast otherwise it will go down as one of the most costly multi-year gambles in Bills history.

yah, the smart thing to do would have been to keep the aging, declining, 10 yards per catch (absolutely horrible for a WR) moulds for 7 million. :w00t:

Look I like Moulds and I wish him the best. Evans is doing pretty good with all the double coverage he has been receiving with no threat opposite of him or playing on a consistent offense that is constantly moving the ball putting Evans in a position to score. But this post seems to be more about throwing a cheap shot at JP.Why are all these cheap shots thrown at JP, making it seem like he has been here for 3-4 years and has been given every chance in the world to develop and succeed and now it is on him? Like he has had all world talent around him and there is no way he shouldn't be producing or that he is holding back a team that is ready to win now. I don't get it!

well that QB passed the ball really well to evans last year. difference now evans doesn't have what it takes to be a #1 WR. he's an excellent #2 because of his speed but he's not as physical as a steve smith, doesn't win size matchups like TO and doesn't have the athletic ability of a randy moss.

people can continue to deny the obvious but this team has a glaring need at WR now too.

There are so many problems with the Bills offense it's not possible IMO to say he's not cutting it. He's caught about everything thrown his way. He's been open and overthrown. He's been open and not thrown to, and he hasn't been open at times. O-line not consistantly giving the QB time. #2 receivers and tight ends and backs don't seem to be big threats in this offense so Lee is going to see extra coverage rolled to him. Remember when Andre Reed was #1 he had Lofton, Pete M. and Thurman as other receiving threats. Yeah, Pete M caught a lot of balls. If you're defending the Bills and you can blanket Lee Evans, stack against the run - what threat is left? Tight ends not seeing much as they're usually called upon to block. To me this all goes back to the offensive line and your ability to protect on passing plays and still block well enough in the run game to pick up yards even when the defense is expecting you to run. Good teams do that.

He played like crap against the Pats, but otherwise Evans has had a solid season. Our "glaring" need at WR is for someone to complement Evans, not the other way around. Ideally a big receiver that's a real threat in the red zone.

I loved Moulds while he was here, but he turned into a b*tch the last few years and he's really not very good anymore. Evans is better than Moulds now. Moulds would not be getting doubled anymore anyway.

Actually the Moulds move did work out for somebody, Andre Johnson. He's having a huge year playing next to a guy who may not be what he once was, but Moulds still commands attention from a defense. And David Carr was lookin good prior to a benching, Im sure it was for one game however

good point, johnson is leading the league in yards and he has 4 TDs. proves the point about the value of Moulds.

In the offseason I was very criticial of the Moulds trade. I argued, and still believe, that the Bills receiving corps would be better with a big physical receiver who could use his size and strength to get passes. The Bills receivers were all of the same mold. Speedy guys but not physical. They simply do not have contrasting and complementary capabilities to play a more diverse game. I also thought that the only good thing that could come out of this season was learning whether or not JP could develop into a franchise QB. To find that out, the Bills should surround him with talent, giving him the best chance to develop. That doesn't seem to be happening.

However I would argue that the Bills didn't totally lose out in this trade. They did draft Kyle Williams. He's on the light side but is doing pretty well for a 5th rounder.

yeah it proves the worth of moulds but bottom line, this is a business, he's making too much money to do nothing more than take pressure off of evans, he isnt a number one wideout anymore and wanted to be paid like you, Evans is doing fine, football takes 11 guys on the same page, and this team doesnt have that at all, with or without moulds

moulds not worth it? let's see the three guys he's played with - Price, Evans and Johnson - are all far better with him than without.

Evans is a WR who is at his best downfield, which means the QB has to be able to take a 5 step drop and throw. In Buffalo, by the fifth step Losman has someone coming clean at him probably 80% of the time. Literally. Teams do not respect the Bills O-line and they know if they really need to hit the QB they can send one extra man and it's a guarantee that they will get there.

That said, Evans has improved greatly in the short passing game and running after the catch. He's a true #1, he gets open, he catches nearly everything and he makes plays after the catch. The Bills haven't had a receiver do all of those things since Moulds and Price were together in 2002, and Evans is faster, smarter, runs better routes and has better hands and a better attitude than Moulds ever did.
