Good.  The label will make the Dems look even more extremist in the future and turn off moderate voters elsewhere.

Not really, the Dems will put distance between him and themselves as he's running as an Independent, not as a Democrat.

Exactly. The label. Socialism seems to equate to satanism in the eyes of many Americans. In reality, all forms of socialism do not necessarily lead to the apocalypse. For decades the politics of the Scandinavian nations have been dominated by democratic socialist parties and this did not lead to the collapse of civilization, far from it.

FAR from it......yeah.... things like social unrest and 20% unemployment rates are indicators of a socio-economic system doing just swimmingly.

In Scandinavian countries?

Where are you referring to?

BBC country profiles:

Denmark

"Denmark has won plaudits for running a healthy economy. Its employment levels are the envy of many industrialised countries and it accommodates a competitive economic edge as well as a generous social security system. "

Finland

"The country invests heavily in education, training and research, investment which pays dividends by delivering one of the best educated and trained workforces in the world. "

Norway

"The Kingdom of Norway enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world."

Sweden

"Unemployment is low and the economy strong."

"The Swedes still enjoy an advanced welfare system, and their standard of living and life expectancy are almost second to none. "

Damn socialists. They sound like terrible places to live :D

Here we go again.

The US is a nation of 300 million multi-cultural people. Denmark is a country of what, 6 million Danes? It's a hell of a lot easier when everyone in your country thinks alike, is culturally alike and your population is 1/50th the size of the world's most powerful economy to be all touchy-feely and socialist. For a more accurate look at what the meaning of Socialism does, take a look at France, Germany, Italy, or your beloved UK.

Stagnant economies, high unemployment, lack of innovation.

The UK hasn't been socialist for decades. I'm not arguing that socialism is the cure for all the world's ills, merely that the automatic kneejerk reaction of most Americans to recoil in horror and make the sign of the cross at the mere hint of any sort of a socialist agenda is shortsighted.

It hasn't?

You still have a bountiful welfare system, free medical care from the state, and cradle-to-grave social support. If that ain't socialism, I don't know what is.

Oh, let's not forget the VAT.

:D

True enough. What I meant was that the last British government that could truly be described as "socialist" was Callaghan's in the '70s.

Italy has high unemployment in the south. The reason being that the people in the south would rather be farmers. Canada is somewhat Socialist and yet has reasonable levels of unemployment.

We have a hybrid form of it in NYS and look what has happened to the Empire State. Excluding NYC, why is the rest of the country so much better economically that Upstate?

Socialism has been in the US for generations

One party just does not want to admit they let it happen

The other party does not want to alert the nation we are Socialist so they can push more Socialism thru

And regardless of party, the party that passes it touts it as a well deserved benefit and the other party denounces it as government pork

did someone say pork? pork, like ham. Ham like ham and cheese hot pockets®! gotta go

I'm not exactly ecstatic at seeing my hard-earned cash being taken either, but if I think the money is going to be used to build a better society then I believe it to be a price worth paying.

Listen, you just don't have to suffer through the outrage of being undertaxed.

By all means, please send in all of your money - or however much you think they deserve - to the government of your choice. Just don't volunteer them to take mine.

Please take up the fight and get all your friends to send in their money too. Don't stand still for this injustice. You have a right to be taxed and also a right to give generously to the taxman of your choice. It'll work. Don't just stand by passively and be continually humiliated by the fact that your paycheck is too fat. Dig down a bit and give more. It'll satisfy your soul knowing that you've given so much to the eminently worthy cause of wealth distribution.

And don't forget to stop in regularly at your local emergency ward, high school and soup kitchen to be recognized for your generosity to humanity. While you're at it you can resign from all the civic groups and organizations that you've generously contributed your cash and time to over the past several decades. Once your additional tax contributions trickle down through the efficient government bureaucracy to the truly needy that they've identified through their neutrality to special-interest-groups well, paradise can't be far away. And then you can bask in the glorious vision of the new socialist state you're working so hard to create.

Everybody always believes this... It may be true, it may not... Most likely subjective to the individual.

A very effective way to keep the status quo in society and politics...
