ChevyVanMiller Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Here's a vote for "The Band." Whether it was backing up Dylan or making music on their own, they had a sound and a vibe unlike no other. Rent a copy of Sorcese's "The Last Waltz" and see for yourself.
Johnny Coli Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Butthole Surfers 59162 There's an awesome chapter on The Butholes in "Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991" by Michael Azerrad. Really entertaining read. If you're into the early indie rock/hardcore scene stuff, this book is a pretty good read. So is Legs McNeil's book "Please Kill me." Great stuff in that one, too, about the NYC scene.
Thailog80 Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 <------- My vote. 59194 Sean Penn?

Surfmeister Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Greatest American band is ZZ Top or Little Feat small time act is Los Straitjackets. They rock !
IBTG81 Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Faith No More Seriously... The f'ing Eagles? They are horrible. MetalliKorn sucks, Skynard blows...The only good one on the list is Aerosmith.
Rico Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 The greatest American rock band far & away is the Grateful Dead, and I'd say they were pretty close to "mainstream" for the last 10+ years of Jerry's life
Paco Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Faith No More Seriously... The f'ing Eagles? They are horrible. MetalliKorn sucks, Skynard blows...The only good one on the list is Aerosmith. 59359 The Eagles are horrible, but you think Barenaked Ladies are great?
IBTG81 Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 The Eagles are horrible, but you think Barenaked Ladies are great? 59378 Yup! The greatest band in the history of music. You should actually LISTEN to their lyrics. Absolutely brilliant.
JinVA Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 The greatest American rock band far & away is the Grateful Dead, and I'd say they were pretty close to "mainstream" for the last 10+ years of Jerry's life 59366 Yes they were close, but still not mainstream, however they are as you said The greatest and/or gratest
Paco Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 Yup! The greatest band in the history of music. You should actually LISTEN to their lyrics. Absolutely brilliant. 59379 I have two of their albums and do like them. But dude, The Eagles were creating music the likes of which BNL will never understand, in my opinion. Hell, even Skynard were pretty incredible...especially if you were a redneck growing up. But if I recall, you're something of a young'n and probably didn't grow up with either the Eagles or Skynard playing in the background, so I can understand your thinking somewhat.
BillsFanNC Posted October 6, 2004 Posted October 6, 2004 <------- My vote. 59194 If the poll asked greatest NORTH American rock band then you are right, Rush all the way.
