Live&DieBillsFootball Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 This is a hotel-office building right? I dont really see (other than visually) how this will "turn the corner" for Buffalo. 817010 This is a hotel-office-condo building. The British developer who wants to build it is the same guy who recently bought the Statler building and is starting an $80 million dollar makeover of that property. If this guy does these 2 projects, I think we may see more things happening downtown. The biggest part of this deal is that there is no talk of public money involved in the project. Git R' done!
IBTG81 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Chef doesn't need to read articles. He knows everything about Buffalo's dismal past, present, and future, and he does not let facts or potential good news get in the way of his disdain as he glares down at WNY's unwashed masses. 817044

It's funny, where I live, I wish builders would stop building.
smokinandjokin Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Im from Rochester. I guess I just dont see how one skyscraper will do much for a community. I was all for putting a casino in Rochester, but I dont think thats going to happen. 817041 I hear yah, one building certainly doesn't mean that Buffalo has dug itself out of it's slump. However, any groundbreaking around here (or potential groundbreaking) is cause for celebration. I think what's different about this one is that it is 100% privately financed. A British businessman, who has not gotten to where he is by losing money, sees Buffalo as viable investment. That's definitely progress. Additionally, this is a building that can house office space for businesses, adds hotel space to downtown, and will include several high-end condos on the top floors. I would assume this only helps fringe businesses such as restaurants, shops, etc. And, this is not a Bass Pro- this will be the tallest building in Buffalo and alter the city's skyline forever. That's why this one seems to be more of a 'bigger deal' than previous announcements. And the fact that no public money is needed gives it an obvious advantage.
\GoBillsInDallas/ Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 George Hamberger, fromRealtyUSA, who is representing Issa in his Buffalo projects, said he will be focusing on luring businesses from New York and Toronto to build a tenant base for the signature building. 816899
The Senator Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 will you be able to see the new peace bridge from this building? 816968 I'm afraid not - unfortunately that vista will be obstructed by the new Bass Pro bait & tackle shop.
bills_fan Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I think downtown started turning around back in 1988, with the construction of Pilot Field. It was the first major development in downtown in years, it was done right and that started the trend that now counts the Loft Apts, HSBC Arena and Chippewa St as successes.

And I have the cities wonderful 30 year track record to prove it. What makes you think that city will ever turn itself around.
The Senator Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 Don't worry, the politicians and unions will probably kill it long before a shovelful of dirt is ever moved. 816961 They won't need to - the residents of Whitney Place and lower Allentown, and the NIMBY Association will sue to block the project. Carl Montante (Uniland) and Carl Paladino (Ellicott Development) will gladly join the suit - bringing in big legal guns from Phillips Lytle and Hodgson Russ - because the project would threaten their interests downtown. On the brighter side, it's a good thing the NFTA revoked the lease, cancelled all planned summer events, and shut down The Pier - so Uniland could get a quick start on that great new Outer Harbor project.
loadofmularkey Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I believe it was Kevin Sylvester who once stated during his tenure on the WGR morning show something along the lines of, "If it appears as a sketch in the Buffalo News, it aint ever happening." That building looks pretty sexy. Too bad we'll never see it.
SilverNRed Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 40-story office-hotel structure also would be most expensive At 600 feet tall, the $361 million, ultra-contemporary glass and steel office, hotel and condo tower would eclipse the HSBC Center in height by 33 feet and would rank among the tallest buildings between New York City and Chicago. New Buffalo New Buffalo 2 New Buffalo 3 Go Buffalo! 816899 This is going to look great right next to those sketches of the new bridge to Canada!
gmac17 Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 wait till they try to build this with non-union help. They are trying to build a building on Delaware right now, and the unions are picketing. They have gone to court and the IDIOT JUDGE made a ruling along the lines of "as long as the picketers move out of the way within 2 minutes, they aren't doing anything illegal. (i think the time is 2 minutes). Anyway, this means the guys block the driveway for 1:55 for every truck - and when you are trying to pour concrete and have trucks backing up it can really screw things up...

Chef Jim Posted October 25, 2006 Posted October 25, 2006 I'll tell you what: THE SABRES ARE UNDEFEATED, BABY!!! 817220 They sure are......not sure what that has to do with anything. But thanks for pointing that out.

Wacka Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 They could build it next to the 400 ft gold arch and Virgin Mary statue that somebody proposed they build near the Bethlehem Steel site.
