It has been my impression that most people do not bother with them anymore because of the advance in all-season tire performance. Am I wrong?

All season don't get the job done as well. I can't really afford new tires on my car but I've driven with real good winter tires on my brothers car and i see the difference.

I never get them. When I used to I could tell the difference. When accelerating from a dead stop, there would always be much more grip.

If I had to commute more then the 20 minutes I do now I would probably invest in them, but I don't think it's worth the cost for the driving I do.

Also (I think most) AWD vehicles require the same size wheels and tires on all 4...

I don't think that is necessarily the case. My Audi has the same size all the way around, but I'd be surprised if say a AWD Porche does.

I think if anything, I think snows are less expensive than good tires, although I haven't bought any in yrs. Bear in mind, that by using snows, you're saving the tread on your good tires thereby extending their life. Unless you're paying someone each spring & fall to change your tires (but of course you'd rotate your tires regularly anyway, right? ), if anything, I'd think using snows would save you money.

Set of Four.

AWD = identical rims and tires, else the drive train gets geshocken!@#$ened. (Excepted from my A6 manual.) ;)

Maybe... But, aren't you just ponying up your money in advance? Good if you can wear the snows down before resale.

I think the bene is really in improved traction and wear on your nicer summer rims (assuming have the snows pre-mounted on a separate set of durable winter rims)...

On another note... Why the hell are auto makers pushing larger and larger rims... 16", 17'' and 18"???

Wouldn't gas milelage get better with conventional 13"-15" rims and tires??

In the summer I put all season tires. In the winter I put winter tires. Winter tires have been more expensive, keep in mind I pay cost price on them. To pay 15$ twice a year to have them changed and rotated isn't the end of the world.

If you're driving a 4 banger or sports type car you gotta have snows in upstate NY to be safe.

That's BS. I have a sports coupe and the thing does just fine. People who need snow tires should save their money and enroll in some driving classes.
