Oneonta Buffalo Fan Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 WOW! Chris loves Tom! That makes me sick...please add to contributing factors as to why I hate ESPN. 789. Ted Bruschi 790. Christ Mortenson 795118 Espn radio is better than sportcenter. At least there Mort seems to like what the Bills are doing right now. So I've heard.
obie_wan Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 I agree with what Mort says, but at the same time, I know for a fact, TD played a large role in creating the dysfunctional atmosphere that enveloped the franchise the past two years...I am pretty sure Mort knows that too.... I fully expect TD to be a GM in the NFL next year, and I believe he will succeed...I think he is likely intelligent enough to learn from the myraid of personal miscalculations he made in Buffalo. 795316 why? he didn't learn from them in Pittsburgh. drafting undersized midget kick returners with your first pick is not the long term recipe for sucess. (repeated the Troy Edwards mistake in Buffalo)
In space no one can hear Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 He made mistakes in coaching. I think most everyone agrees with that (with the possible exception of Mort). It's not an exact science, and outside of the Steelers, there isn't one team let alone GM in the entire league that has made two straight good head coaching hires. TD did, however, hire Cowher so he isn't totally stupid. John Fox himself said he didn't do well in his interview and wasn't ready to take the Bills job. I think most people close to this situation feel we had no chance to get Marvin Lewis. Gregg Williams is indeed a hot commodity, and even I think will be a damn good head coach sometime. He wasn't ready when he was the Bills coach. TD did have some say, I would imagine, in hiring Bobby April, whom virtually everyone on this board thinks is the very best in the league at his job. 795582 Apparently you don't like to look at the big picture (an organization working as a functional team to strive to be championship caliber) Or the bottom line under Donahoe (did you happen to notice their won lost record when he had unprecedent control over the franchise) We can go tit for tat on good moves bad moves but remember even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile That fact is Donahoe needed to be canned! This belated lovefest(or even likefest) for Donahoe is pathetic. My guess is you were one of the sheep who claimed Donahoe was a "master poker player" and wet their pants over each one of his brilliant moves The Kool-aid is gone. The Bills are back. Thank Wilson. Thank Levy. Thank Jauron. Its a new era. In fact its an old era ...like the era before Donahoe when we spent more years challenging for The Super Bowl than we spent wondering what rabbit old whitey would try to pull out of his hat. Go Bills!!!!!!!!!!

Kelly the Dog Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 You guessed wrong..smarty pants! 795886 Then you would have noticed that twice in the thread I had already said I was glad he was gone and we're much better off that he's gone. That he failed grossly at his job. And that he did some bad, and very bad things. And that he hired bad coaches. Not what I would call a lovefest. But of course you didn't read, and then you lied about it. Nice job.
Nostradamus Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 Dan (New York, NY): Chris, howcome you can't talk about the Bills without mentioning Tom Donahoe? He had 5 years to get things working in buffalo, and failed year after year. He drafted some of the right guys, but the coaches he hired were failures and the schemes they used didn't utilize their players' talents. How about commenting on Levy, Modrak, and Juaron a little bit? Chris Mortensen: (11:58 AM ET ) I am going to do something on the Bills in my blog this week. I can't believe that Buffalo folks aren't willing to give credit to Donohoe for at least inheriting a team with a salary cap mess, a quarterback mess and then putting together some pretty good talent. Don't believe that Levy was involved that much in this draft because he wans't up to snuff but I give Marv a lot of credir for hiring Jauron, who hired his own good staff. Mularkey did win his first year, by the way, and Levy wanted him back. Greg Williams was everybody's hot coach last winter. I'm not saying Donohoe was perfect but nobody is and it's ridiculous that people won't acknowledge that he does deserve credit the Bills' promise right now - Losman, McGahee, Evans, Reed, Parrish, Fletcher, Kelsay, Denny, Clements, McGee, etc. He also hired Modrak, by the way. I hope it all works out for the Bills but let's be fair and not one-sided. 795106 Hey Chris, 31-49. End of story.
BoondckCL Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 A quiet hush falls among the crowd as the onlookers wait for the inevitable onslaught. A plastic bag blows across the street, thus disecting the path of attack between Kelly the Fair and Balanced Dog and bflodan. Dan's stare is an obvious plea to intimidate Kelly, but Kelly merely delivers Dan's stare right back in his general direction. The stare down is on. The two approach each other slowly at first, and then pace picks up as the anticipation in the crowd arises. Suddenly from the back row some one shouts... CRIPPLE FIGHT!!!!! and the two opponents begin battle, as the crowd views the conflict, eagerly anticipating the outcome of what is bound to be a grusome event.

It appears pretty obvious to these eyes that you haven't been reading what are some very objective football posts. If you want to disagree with him on the merits of what he writes, fine. If you want to make some dumb joke about cripple fights, go share your intellectual social commentary on a South Park message board where you will fit right in with the pantheon of people with nothing to say and tons of time to say it.

TigerJ Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 It's real simple, Mort. Very few GM are so incompetent that they make all the wrong decisions regarding players signed or drafted and coaches hired. If they did, they wouldn't last very long, unless they happen to be Matt Millen in Detroit. On the other hand, any GM that made all the right decisions would have a team that was so dominant they would never lose. That means, every GM has both good moves and bad ones. That includes Tom Donahoe. Donahoe admittedly came into a difficult situation in Buffalo with the salary cap woes. It was a given that Buffalo was going to struggle. Yeah, Gregg Williams said "This team right now can win the Super Bowl," but he must have been smoking something. The bottom line is that even with that difficult set of circumstances that first year, Donahoe had enough time to build a solid winner in Buffalo. He didn't. Than means he did not make enough good decisions, and he made too many bad ones. I'm happy to give him credit for London Fletcher and Jason Peters and many of the other solid acquisitions. Some were more than solid. They were brilliant. But he's also got to take the blame for Mike Williams and others. He didn't do enough. It was time for him to get dumped. No regrets. Thank you, Mr. Wilson.

Buftex Posted October 5, 2006 Posted October 5, 2006 why? he didn't learn from them in Pittsburgh. drafting undersized midget kick returners with your first pick is not the long term recipe for sucess. (repeated the Troy Edwards mistake in Buffalo) 795847 Just a hunch I guess....TD did a lot of things wrong, but he had a fair number of pretty great moves too. As has been pointed out by others, and I agree, more than drafting this bust or that bust, TD's biggest flaw was hiring men to coach his team that just were not ready to have that job. I am of the feeling that in both of these hirings, TD's ego played a role...I know, personally, that TD was devastated at being let go by Ralph Wilson, and really never thought it would happen. My opinion is, TD is still a pretty smart guy, who admittedly, has some problems. He heard the whispers from Pittsburgh, upon being hired in Buffalo, that it the Steelers picked their coach over their GM...he wasn't going to be caught in that situation again. He hired guys who were not going to overshadow him...he wanted to hear Madden & Michaels kill time during those inevitable Monday (now Sunday) night blow-outs, declaring that he (TD) was a football genious...it just didn't work out that way for TD. I think next time around, he will be wise enough to pick a better headcoach... a guy who can coach the guys that he drafts...I gotta say, Dick Jauron/Steve Fairchild have already gotton more out of some of the players on this squad, than I ever thought possible. A humbled TD will help some poor team...I'd still take him over Matt Millen and a number of other NFL GMs....
