During the last two and a half years, our local high school team had lost 20 consecutive games. This year with a new coach, the losing streak has ended and the team has shown a marked improvement. To be sure our team is not yet a good team, but they are more competive and most of all, they have drastically cut down on errors such as dumb penalties. One thing that can be said about our local team (Waverly High School in Waverly, NY) is that in spite of our shortcomings, we are fundamentally sound and are learning the basics.

I share this because when I see the Buffalo Bills play, I see an undisciplined and fundamentally dumb football team. They may have players who possess great skill and strength but when it comes to basic skills and playing smart, they are less advanced that a bunch of 16 year olds who are coming off a 20 game losing streak. The reason New England has won 18 games in a row is not so much that they have superior talent (There are not many superstars on the Patriots), but because they may be the smartest team in the game. They do not do stupid things to cost them a game.

The current version of the Bills do not possess one player who stands out as a real student of the game with the exception of Lawyer Malloy and Troy Vincent. When the Bills had those great teams of the early 90's, they had great talent but they also had some students of the game. Jim Kelly, in spite of his lousy knees and slow footedness could read a defense on the fly. Kent Hull was one of the smartest linemen that I have ever seen. Steve Tasker was a very smart player as were a number of other players. Even Thurman Thomas, in spite of his quirkiness and forgetting his helmet during the Superbowl knew when a blitz was coming and could provide a key block at the right time because he knew the game.
